2013 was a particularly strong year for beer garden openings in New York City and perhaps the part of town most desperate for one finally saw its wish granted. Clinton Hall brings a much welcomed alternative to the usual Stone Street centric scene, with more than twenty rotating beers on tap to appease the downtown suits. Coupled with a nice outdoor area on a relatively remote street, Clinton Hall offers a festive atmosphere that will last long after the place’s new-ness wears off.

The hours after work are certainly when you want to be checking out Clinton Hall, a sentiment that rings true for the entire Financial District actually. The outdoor communal tables are set up beer garden style, but amid the street side setting, the place exudes a fairly rustic feel underneath white Radeberger umbrellas. Fortunately there are heatlamps as well to entice high profile clientele in warmer months- but on this temperate evening and as summer approaches- that’s of no concern to us. Inside, the space is dark- lit up by flat screen televisions and overhead bulbs shining on the much nicer, darker tables that sit in the Hall’s main facility. The exposed brick behind the bar is sandwiched between reflective mirrors that list the many draught beers, poured to a typically fully occupied twenty seat bar.

As you might expect, beer prices here are hardly competitive. After all, it is a beer garden. But that said, there’s a good variety of styles and you’re likely to taste something entirely new. During our visit, I sipped on some familiar brews like a $14 liter of Radeberger and some half-liters of Weihenstephan ($8), a nice seasonal hefeweizen. Clinton Hall’s real value though lies inside of their “Keg O’Doom,” the remainder of whatever keg they’ve got laying around, which is priced at just $5. And if you’re adventurous enough to taste it and you’re able to guess the keg, the place sets you up with a free one. Fortunately, we grabbed some pours of the “Bronx Brewery Summer Ale,” unbeknownst to me- and a pleasant surprise indeed. For as many hours as I’ve spent toasting $7 Bud Light bottles on Stone Street, my first visit to Clinton Hall was a refreshing one in the area. It’s a perfect middle ground for PATH travelers and New Yorkers, an alternative to the scene on Stone Street, and is easier to get re-acclimated into city life than a walk to the Battery Park City nowhere land would leave you. But best of all- it’s just a really good beer garden to have in Manhattan.

The Rundown

Bar Type - A mostly outdoor beer garden that boasts a nice rotation of domestic and international craft brews.

When to Visit – If you’re in the Financial District on a weekend, you either live in the area or it’s for someone’s birthday. Your bread and butter down there is after work. And it’s always going to be buzzing at Clinton Hall from 6pm on whether on game night or during a routine Happy Hour.

Value - Though much of the desired beer list is certainly not cheap, their $5 “Keg O’Doom” specials for mystery beers are priced at solid value. Unless of course you get a sour style, which frankly, nobody likes. To further entice you, stop into Clinton Hall on a Tuesday until 7pm all summer long for 25% the bill….for parties under 8.

The Lowdown – Despite having been opened since 2013, it took me far too long to trek down to FiDi to check out Clinton Hall. Maybe all I needed was some warm weather and sunshine, but whatever the case, it’s a beer garden that is worth the trip. The vibe is fun whether indoors or outdoors and it’s a professional space that never takes itself too seriously. And since all trains intersect nearby, it’s a breeze getting to either the east or west side once you’ve had way too much German beer and you need to head home. So the next time you’re thinking of a cool, new-ish bar to check out with some buds, smash together your big liter glasses at Clinton Hall, a noteworthy addition to an increasingly growing beer garden scene.

We’re just days away from St. Patrick’s Day here in New York City, which only means that warmer weather is right around the corner. And if you’ve only heard of the illusive beer gardens that the borough of Queens has to offer, it’s time to take the short train ride out there from Manhattan and experience them for yourself. In the growing, bustling neighborhood of Long Island City sits a massive indoor and outdoor space that casts a far reaching shadow over all beer gardens which have come before it. Enter Studio Square, a gigantically modern but incredibly laid back space with huge communal tables on the patio out back as well as inside the hall for days when inclement weather is prevalent.

Having been to Studio Square during a St. Patty’s Day in the past, I can assure you that there is truly nothing like the experience anywhere in the City. From the festive attire donned by the sea of guests to the heavy smiles painted on faces of thirsty drinkers just happy to be outdoors somewhere, waving goodbye to the blustery winds of winter, Studio Square on St. Patrick’s Day is an outright party. That said, the holiday is only the kickoff to the experiences which lie ahead for the rest of the year. With minimalist design, the 30,000 square foot interior is a sight to behold, but not necessarily one who’s décor you’d marvel at. The run of the mill German styled rustic design is absent at Studio Square, and in its stead lies a basic, new looking event hall that just happens to house a ton of beers. But therein lies much of the place’s charm.

We dropped by on a recent weekend afternoon. During the colder months, crowds can be minimal early in the day but we found a couple of welcoming stools at the bar and enjoyed pours of “Blue Moon” and “Blue Points” offered up in differing sizes, including traditional German style liters or ‘Steins.’ Although it was too chilly to step out on the back patio, we did manage to survey the surrounding space, which has more televisions than you can imagine, endless supplies of seating, and a full service kitchen preparing everything from fries, wings, and sandwiches to German beer fare like brats, sausages, pretzels, and hot dogs. (Alright, maybe there’s more German influence than we gave them credit for) Studio Square also offers up some great deals if you manage to make it inside before 8pm during the week with any 5 pitchers for $60 and shots priced at $2 and $3; not to mention $12 Blue Moon and Coors Light pitchers during any Nets and Knicks regular season games. But our advice, get out there for St. Patrick’s Day to see what Studio Square is like at its zenith. And from there, you’ll be desperate to return time and time again.

Bar Type – An absolutely massive 30,000 square foot beer garden that mixes in elements of sports bar, hot spot, and a modern twist on traditional German elements.

When to Visit – Head over for St. Patrick’s Day, but when the weather warms up, grab a group of your buddies, get there early, and secure a table. See if you leave before the sun goes down.

Value – The value lies in the weekday specials, so make sure to duck inside before 8pm to take advantage of some excellent deals. The beers aren’t exactly cheap, but $12 pitchers on NBA game nights certainly isn’t out of line.

The Lowdown – It’s difficult to speak any more highly of Studio Square. There’s a reason that everyone you know talks about the ‘beer gardens in Queens,’ and this place is perhaps the best of the best. It’s a great spot for non-beer drinkers based on the vibe and atmosphere inside, and the outdoor patio space feels like the most fun tailgate you’ve ever been to. It’s modern. It’s fun. And it’s reason enough to take the short ride out to Queens with all of your friends. Studio Square is proof that you CAN have fun, exploring your city.

Can you smell it? The scent of newly laid and finished wood. A freshly tapped keg spurts momentarily as a spritz of beer fills the air. Yes, this all only means one thing: a new bar has opened up. In Park Slope, Brooklyn these watering hole openings have been seemingly occurring every other week. On a block that had once been dominated by dollar stores and bodegas now sits a sleek space that seems it has literally been here and preserved for decades. We’re talking about the recently established Prospect Bar located in the South Slope. The LocalBozo crew stepped inside the bar to grab a few pints and detail everything about the cool new joint.

The surrounding area still retains some of the charming grit that this section of the neighborhood is known for. But step through the doors of Prospect Bar and you’ll enter into a different world altogether. The first thing to take note of is the truly large size of the space. To the right of the entrance is the long and ornate bar, hand crafted from choice wood. The area yields a satiating scent of hand-craftsmanship and fresh carpentry. Several stools line the bar providing more than ample room for groups to sit or strangers to meet. Not up for sitting at the bar? No problem. Head over to one of many long tables that surround the bar, which bring on the feeling that you’re at a bier hall and not in a pub type setting. During the warmer months, the true cherry on top of Prospect lies just past the back doors. The bar has a bi-level outdoor space featuring umbrella covered picnic tables and small bistro style tables to quench all of your day drinking needs.

Prospect’s bar space is also outfitted with 22 different taps with beers averaging about $5. The beer menu is boldly displayed against the side wall with brands and prices listed on individual tiles. Fans of the ‘hard stuff’ can rest easy as the bar has a large variety of bourbons, ryes, and some of our favorite scotches. We ponied up to Prospect Bar on a weekday during the late afternoon hour. Luckily for us it was smack dab in the middle of the pub’s weekly Happy Hour. From 4pm-8pm customers can enjoy $1 off all tap beers and $4 well drinks, an incredibly good deal when you consider the caliber of craft brews this place is pouring. Because of the summery weather outside, we opted for pints of Brooklyn Brewery’s ‘Weisse’ variety. This popular local wheat beer never ceases to impress, especially during the warmer months. Its fruity notes and rich aroma always lead us to repeat pints.

The newly opened large bar screams for people to bring in large groups of friends and laugh it up on any day. The space is certainly equipped for that. And since man and woman kind cannot live on brews alone, the bar will soon feature a pub-style food menu and even brunch. So make your way down to 5th Avenue and take in the old school sights outside. Then park yourself into Prospect Bar for great values and a cool setting to seriously stretch your legs and livers.

One of the toughest parts about being in the city during the summer is the lack of outdoor space. Not everyone has a backyard, a patio, balcony, or roof deck, so enjoying those summertime drinks in an environment that matches is near impossible. However, with Hoboken’s newest pop-up bar, Pier 13 is all about green grass, great views, and top notch beer.

Just a stone’s throw away from the North Hoboken Ferry Stop (on 14th Street) jutting out into the Hudson River at 13th Street and Sinatra Drive is Pier 13, the newest beer garden in the area. Much like the popular Frying Pan in Manhattan, everyone loves a good drink on the Hudson River. Unlike the Frying Pan, Pier 13 isn’t overly packed, isn’t overrun with the Frat crowd, and has great views of NYC. As you walk on down the pier into the “bar” you first come across numerous picnic tables and benches which, depending on when you show up, may or may not be occupied. You will want to work your way to the bar, which is basically a beer truck. However, unlike most beer trucks, this is complete with a full bar. Wine, mixed drinks, and frozen cocktails are all available, but it’s the beer selection that shines. With a wide selection of craft and micro brews, this pop-up bar ranks up there with Hoboken’s best beer stops. Purple Haze, Sweet Action, Philly Pale Ale, and a number of Dogfish Heads brews are all on tap with numerous other bottles to boot. Most beers I found to be $8, with PBR cans being reasonably priced at $4. If the beer line seems long and you want one of the can/bottles, sneak further down the pier and there is a waitress with ice coolers full of beer (cash only).

We showed up here early on a Saturday night, around 6 PM for a few pre-dinner drinks. It was a picture perfect night and the Pier was filling up nicely. However instead of the common Hoboken 20-somethings, the scene was split between young families and the typical 20 somethings. It was kinda shocking and fun watching parents enjoying a couple of beers with their friends as their young children were playing with other children on the pier. Kids were enjoying playing tag in the grass. Other adults were having a couple beers in the lounge chairs that Pier 13 provided. There was a great sense of community out on the waterfront, which I appreciate.  While no food is served by Pier 13, you can bring your own chips and dip, or grab some food from the food trucks that stop nearby like Luke’s Lobster and Hoboken’s own Taco Truck, which have been known to frequent the area.  I had a couple of Summer Blondes and enjoyed my time way out on the river, with the city so close, you could almost touch it.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – I had heard a lot of good things since their 4th of July opening, but I figured that since everyone was talking about it that it would be overrun by the frat crowd. I was definitely wrong!

Bar Type – Beer Garden

Crowd stereotype – Lots of young families with their kids and other large groups of friends.

Music – They had a DJ that was one of the best I’ve heard spinning at a bar.  Definitely helped to make for a better spot by mixing the fun songs that everyone knew and not house music which makes you cringe.

Value – Only downside, $4 PBRs are a little high. $10 mixed drinks and $8 high quality beers is probably on target, but definitely not a great value.

Good for a….

Date – Bring them, it’s a great place to double, to relax and talk.

Hookup – Maybe you will end up meeting someone here.

Dance – Little kids were grooving to the music, but I don’t think you want to be dancing out there.

Catch up with a friend – Great

First or last drink of the night – Closes fairly early cause of noise issues (11PM M-Sat, 10 PM on Sundays) with the neighbors so it’s a better first drink than a last drink.

Overall – Definitely has been a major addition to the Hoboken bar scene. Being so close to the ferry and the bus has made this a place even people from NYC are willing to come to…and they should as it might beat out any outdoor venue in Manhattan. Relaxing crowd, good music, and a deep beer list it’s a perfect mix. Great for one of those afternoon weekend heavy drinking days. Get yourself a tan, bring in some food and cozy up on a beach chair or 2. Get some great happy hour specials and this could be as close to a 10 as you could get. Hurry up and get over to Pier 13 before the summer is done and it closes up.… I’ll give it an 9.5.

New York’s latest trend of outdoor beer gardens is far from a fad, and we couldn’t be happier. Located in the Greenwood Heights – South Slope section of Brooklyn sits “Greenwood Park,” the newly opened beer garden and bar, borne from the minds of the owners of popular watering holes “Cubana Social,” “Matchless,” and “Bar 4.” Without ever letting a notable bar opening pass us by, the LocalBozo crew headed to “Greenwood Park” on its opening weekend- and yeah, we grabbed several beers as well.

Arrive at 555 Seventh Avenue, and you may think it’s the wrong location. The creators of Greenwood have surrounded the entire 3,000-square-foot property with massive walls of shipping pallets, making it appear to be any other industrial business in the area. But, once you walk through the large metal gates you will find a drinking oasis unlike any you have imbibed at throughout town. Large and small garden tables fill this outdoor space, providing more than enough seating to accommodate every size party. The bar which serves the beer garden is located in a reclaimed shipping crate. While you’re taking in the sun, why not grab a drink to beat the heat. Happy Hour specials will keep you delightfully sauced from 12-7 as well, when all drafts are $3 and well drinks $4. A bocce ball court sits just to the side giving patrons their fix of this very popular bar sport.

Not into sitting outside? No problem. “Greenwood Park” features a sprawling indoor bar located in what appears to be a former garage. The long bar is filled with a ton of boozing options like the tasty homemade red or white Sangria ($6 Pints, $20 Pitchers). We grabbed glasses of the white and they were filled with fantastic flavor and loaded with minced fruit. If you’re more of a beer lover this place has you covered, boasting solid selections of craft brews from their many taps. As of our visit, guests could grab pints from the likes of Kelso Pilsner, Goose Island Summertime, and Narraganset Lager. Each pint is priced between $5-$7. The joint also sports a friendly food menu. Guests can order light and seasonal items such as a “Corn and Tomato Salad in a Lime Vinaigrette” ($5) or backyard grilling standards like their much talked about, “Grass-fed Burgers” ($7). All of “Greenwood Park’s” spirits and food selections are cash only so remember to bring some dough along or use their onsite ATM.

Greenwood has an innovative and industrial feel throughout the entire place. It’s fantastic to see the combination of past and present architecture, all while sipping on some great brews, and munching on some tasty bar food. Greenwood Park is a joint not to be missed this summer or any other. Grab a seat a noon, and stay all day. Just make sure to put on plenty of sunblock.

If you found yourself anywhere near Madison Square Park this weekend, you were likely inundated with the familiar scents of smoke-filled air, live music, and energetic crowds full of anticipation. We’re speaking of course about the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party and in its tenth exciting year, the Union Square Hospitality Group recruited some of the country’s finest pit masters to take over the Park and it’s surrounding streets for a two day celebration of authentic ‘cue grilling.

With thousands of New Yorkers attending, this year’s FastPasses sold out in record time. The pass, when purchased in advance, puts you ahead of the general admission crowd and on an immediate line toward quicker eats. But showing up bright and early didn’t necessarily mean you’d get a jump on the other likeminded eaters thinking the same way, as the early Saturday afternoon lines plodded a bit to get going. Hungry eaters wouldn’t be detracted from attending the event however, as throngs of people paced the ample space of the park. Divide and conquer proved a pivotal formula to the day as groups segregated in order to hit some of the longer lines, before re-convening with as many as six dishes each and passing the different tastes around to each other. Most of the generously portioned plates were priced at around $8, meaning you weren’t forced to break the bank eating at the otherwise free event. And the beautiful weather on Saturday and Sunday certainly added to the already festive atmosphere.

Since we attended the Block Party on both weekend days, we managed to sample some of the more sought after tastes available. With different styles of barbecue being brought in from places like Nashville, Alabama, Virginia, South Carolina, Dallas, and St. Louis solely for this event, word spread quickly about which options ranked highest. Our first stop on Day 1 of the festival was at Decatur, Alabama’s ‘Big Bob Gibson Bar B Que,’ who was serving up a delicious “Pulled Pork Shoulder” sandwich. While not the only pulled pork on the menu across the board, theirs was certainly our favorite- mixing in chunks of the salty meat with their unique blends of traditional and white barbeque sauces. Gibson’s line was the lengthiest but after chomping down on their savory sandwich, we were warranted in having waited. Up next was perhaps the finest ‘cue in New York City at Chef Kenny Callaghan’s ‘Blue Smoke.’ The brand’s “Salt and Pepper Beef Ribs” were served with a basic dry rub that allowed you to taste the flavor of each meaty bone. While Chef Kenny is a co-founder of the Big Apple BBQ Block Party, there was no bias on our part- the greasy ribs were truly excellent.

Speaking of ribs, St. Louis’ Pappy’s Smokehouse cooked up a variety of ‘Baby Backs” that tasted second to none. Lacquered in a caramelized glaze, the ribs were in a word: outstanding, certainly in the running for best in show of the weekend. Served with a side of house made baked beans, we licked every ounce of the sweet, sticky barbeque sauce from each of our fingers rendering our wetnaps useless in the face of the lasting taste from Pappy’s. We capped off our first afternoon with tastes of the “Western Tennessee Style Whole Hog” sandwich from ‘Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint’ in Nashville and our very own “Pulled Pork Shoulder” sandwich from Harlem’s ‘Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.’ Of the two, we favored our local fare, which we found was simply smoked and tasted better overall. ‘Martin’s’ was certainly sufficient in it’s own right, but paled in comparison to the day’s other options.

Day 2 however yielded another exceptional dish vying for the top spot of the weekend. The line for Driftwood, Texas’ ‘The Salt Lick Bar-B-Que’ was frustratingly long as Day 1 commenced, so it became our first stop on Sunday- and after tasting, were we glad that we returned. Their combination dish of “Beef Brisket and Sausage” was fantastic. Served with a side of cold, creamy Cole slaw, the warm, smoked sausage link was absolutely awesome, and the accompanying slices of tender brisket paired with tangy BBQ sauce over a piece of plain white bread had us longing for our days traveling in Texas, where every meal was conceivably this tasty. We closed out our eats for the weekend at Hemingway, South Carolina eatery ‘Scott’s Bar-B-Que’ and another shot at a “Whole Hog” sandwich. Served with some crunchy, sticky pig cracklins’ the salty sandwich went down easy, but again, left something to be desired when following ‘The Salt Lick’s’ platter.

By bringing in some of the finest masters of barbeque from around the country, it’s fastidiousness that forces us to choose our favorites. Truth be told, all of the helpings being plated this weekend were uniquely distinctive and each on their own would be delicious, be it from Manhattan’s finest or some more traditional-style southern fare. Once our hands were full with food trays, we took the time to check out some of the interactive displays around the Park, imbibed a bit in the centrally located Beer Garden, and even checked out some of the talented live bands rocking out. If you were patient enough, you were certainly able to eat everything you desired all weekend long. And if you grew impatient, then you likely settled for shorter lines, but not necessarily second tier fare. With our clothes reeking of a smoky grill and our burps coming up pork, we can confidently say that we managed to taste the best of the best at the 2012 Big Apple BBQ Block Party, which perennially makes traveling for some of the United States’ best barbecue, just a subway ride away.

In July of 2011, Hoboken’s first authentic beer garden arrived in the borough amid much speculation and subsequent fanfare. Tucked uptown on 15th and Grand Street, Pilsner Haus and Biergarten comes to the borough from the team behind the wildly successful Williamsburg haunt, Radegast Hall and Biergarten, which has been purveying tasty imported brews and fare to neighborhood hipsters since the fall of 2007. The festive and cavernous space, much like the surrounding area in which it resides, resembles a non-descript industrial building, in the shadows of the lights of far away Washington Street. But the authenticity and festive nature of the International culture are best reserved for inside the bar’s massive space, which holds perhaps Hoboken’s finest newly created gem. .

Inside, it’s happy hour now. The natural lighting of the sky is dim and the interior of Pilsner Haus follows suit. Large rectangular communal tables make up the bulk of the seemingly endless space in both the bar’s main area as well as its additional side room, surrounded by the ancient looking exposed brick walls, and held together by the sturdiness of old barnwood pillars. Outside, similar tables and umbrellas now folded up sit waiting for the warm weather of springtime, and for some of Hoboken’s most passionate drinkers to make their way uptown. Any returning visitor to the Pilsner Haus will swear by the food here- the “Hungarian Beef Goulash” ($15), an awesome “Bavarian Soft Pretzel” ($11), and the heaping portion of “Steamed Bier Mussels” ($9), being among the highlights. Their separate grill area for brautwursts works like a butcher shop, wherein the waitress will not take your order for them, is also a charming little wrinkle to a visit here.

Unlike most Hoboken happy hours, the suds here unfortunately aren’t dirt cheap, but inside a Biergarten, we wouldn’t expect them to be. They do however offer a free bratwurst with any liter-sized beer as well as $4 half liters before 8pm. And with the heavier beers available at Pilsner Haus, we made sure to have our drinking shoes on. The extensive list of around draught 20 beers sits on a wall behind the main bar, with 50 more of the bottled variety. Although this isn’t the ideal spot to watch a game, as the televisions are practically non-existent, you didn’t come here for sports. You came here for a laid back Bavarian escape, which is exactly what the Pilsner Haus and Biergarten delivers with startling authenticity.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – If it was anything like Radegast Hall and Biergarten, we knew we’d be in for a fantastic new place. Luckily, the owners stayed remarkably true to form, with the only knock being the distance from the usual dive bars we frequent. But hey, it’s time for a change anyway.

Bar Type – The first Authentic Biergarten in Hoboken.

Crowd stereotype – Mostly late 20’s and early 30’s types at the bar, looking like workers grabbing a pop after a long day. For a weeknight, it’s probably a little far uptown to expect many out-of-towners.

Music – Some George Thorogood was tearing up the speakers, but the music was almost like white noise amongst our group’s clinging of liter glasses.

Value – Not the best deal in Hoboken, but you aren’t drinking PBRs here either. It’s a solid deal for some food and a beer and a nice change of pace.

Good for a….

Date – If she’s never been here, bringing a girl on a date here might be intriguing. If you’re a girl bringing your guy here, he might not ever leave.

Hookup – After a weekend day of drinking, I’d definitely think it’s possible. Then again, she may have terrible bratwurst burps.

Dance – Probably not the first place I’d shake my tailfeather, but you’re welcome to pregame here and head out for sure.

Catch up with a friend – Absolutely.

First or last drink of the night – A heavy beer at midnight isn’t always an ideal situation, but throw a couple back here before you head out and you’ll be fine. Or just stay here until you are completely bombed and try to speak fluent German.

Overall – Ask any Hoboken resident who’s been to Pilsner Haus and Biergarten and you’ll likely find nary a negative word used. The vibe here is different than any other crummy spot in the Borough and the place actually feels like it’s away from home. It might be situated in the middle of nowhere but the Munich meets New Jersey atmosphere is unmistakably fun. Finally, a trip out to Brooklyn or Queens isn’t necessary for a Hoboken resident. And best of all it’s an unpretentious no frills bar that is what it is- the best place to come into Hoboken in quite some time. 9.3

Friday, October 21st- Sunday, October 23rd- Head down to Dumbo for the RE/Mixed Media Festival- a 2 day celebration spawning creative takes on mash-ups, artistic freedoms, and copyright law. They’ll have everything from DJs, fashion and food, beat-boxing, interactive activities, painting, new technology and a ton more. Saturday, October 22nd- If you’re free tomorrow, you owe it to yourself to head down to Tompkins Square Park on Avenue A starting at noon. It’s the Halloween Dog Parade. Catch dogs in costume, with a ton of treats for man and canine and it’s all free between East 9th street between Avenues A & B. ( Dog Parade! )

Sunday, October 23rd- The San Diego Super-Chargers head east to battle the Jets in a matchup of “wait, are these two teams even any good?” supremacy. Tickets are still available. Friday, October 7th- Movie release day. Quiet night tonight? Check out these releases coming out today. “Paranormal Activity 3” (R)- The third installment stars a cast of no-names, but looks utterly terrifying. It’s been called the best in the series so far but you’ll have to decide for yourself. Also, the indie film “Martha Marcy May Marlene” (R) opens starring the youngest Olsen- Elizabeth. After leaving a cult, she is haunted by her experiences there. We haven’t seen either yet, but don’t blame us if you hate both.

Friday, October 21st, Sunday, October 23rd- Tonight head out to Terminal 5 and catch five live bands headlined by the Plain White T’s and Never Shout Never, in what should be a fun, all ages show! What better way to check it out than the absolutely free to enter Grub Street Food Festival. We’ll be there after seeing how fantastic last year’s event was. Saturday, October 15th – The Tibet House will host the Maitreya Project Heart Shrine Relic Tour all weekend long. The relics from this tour have been discovered among the cremation ashes of Buddhist masters over millennia, including the historical Shakyamuni Buddha, his closest disciples, and adepts of various Buddhist traditions. The Lot On Tap
The High Line at 30th St and 10th Avenue

Summer is gone and fall is quickly rolling in. Someone must have forgotten to tell the packed crowd eating and drinking away under the historic High Line. “The Lot On Tap” is a temporary outdoor bar serving local wines and seasonal beers from Brooklyn Brewery including Brooklyn High Line Elevated Wheat, served exclusively here. The innovative beer garden is operated by Colicchio & Sons in partnership with Friends of the High Line.

It is hard to believe that this impressive and fun space would have remained like all the other empty lots in the city if it weren’t for this bold team with a vision. The High Line itself is a marvel of modern ingenuity. Therefore it’s fantastic that this vacant lot could be transformed in it’s image. Long wooden tables fill the outdoor blacktop space, providing any sized group with more than enough room to party. During my visit a great music selection filled the background perfect for sing-a-longs, but without being intrusive. Throughout the afternoon and into the evening they played a nice mix of modern rock, 80s hits, and dance hall jams.

The current food truck craze has taken NYC by storm. The folks at “The Lot” have embraced this in an exciting way. Since this outdoor space is quite large, a revolving list of popular New York based food trucks have called this place home, to park all season long. Some of the tasty selections include Korilla BBQ, Eddie’s Pizza Cart, Rickshaw Dumplings, La Bella Torte Desert Truck, and The Taco Truck.

It’s a proven fact- nothing goes better with dumplings or tacos, than a cold draft beer. Luckily the great people at The Brooklyn Brewery have provided some of their very best on tap. Beer tickets need to be purchased before hitting the outdoor bar and cost seven dollars each. Since it is fall, I had to go for Brooklyn’s famous, “Post Road Pumpkin Ale.” Their pumpkin is one of my favorite, so I was thrilled to find it here. The ale has bold notes of pumpkin and spice without being overly sweet.

The Lot On Tap is a prime example of not allowing one inch of our city to go to waste as a vacant wasteland. It is both an economy booster but also a lovely respite for casual eating and drinking in the afternoon. And yes, all of this on tenth avenue. Times they are a changing.
