As we have seen from previous editions of this post, uptown Hoboken is home to some of this community’s more unique venues for alcohol consumption. From Tapas at Lola’s to rock n’ roll at Maxwell’s, the higher streets provide older and/or mature residents and visitors with a less collegiate approach to this historic town. And without any further ado we are proud to descend into the climax of “Spirits in the Sixth Borough” with uptown’s own, “Amanda’s Restaurant.”

If you are coming from near the PATH Station like we did, this spot can be a bit of a walk. But pay this hike no mind. Once you reach 908 Washington Street, the trek will have been worth it. Amanda’s Restaurant is situated inside of a classic brownstone from the late nineteenth century. You may want to spend some time outside to marvel at the place’s ornate exterior, but the real sights lie just beyond the front door. I visited on a Thursday during the early evening hours to sample the drink menu, and get a general taste for this place since I haven’t even passed by it on the street previously. In the entrance sits Amanda’s small yet beautifully designed bar area which can also double as it’s lobby/waiting space for dinner guests checking in with the host. The bar is made of light wood to brighten up the room. A few high stools fit snugly in front of it, providing just a handful of seating. During my visit two gentleman both wearing suits and Oliver People’s glasses were sitting there having a few laughs over beers. Amanda’s bar serves a diverse selection of craft bees on draught from such breweries as Atlantic Highlands’ own, Carton. Yet on this particular evening my tastes tended more towards vino.

Luckily for my friends and I, wine is the name of the game at Amanda’s. Both at the front bar or in the stunning dining room, guests can sample glasses or order entire bottles from a lengthy wine list that has been specially curated. For those celebrating a special event or for those who have a comfortable discretionary income, a reserve list is also available. After a brief, yet lively discussion about my dry style wine tastes with the friendly bartender, I ordered a glass of the, “Finca el Origen 2011 Malbec” ($10 glass). This Argentina red perfectly matched my pallete, making it extremely pleasurable to sip on. Sure, the price might appear steep for a single glass of wine, but once you take your first sip you will know the money went to the right place. If you love fruit infused liquors, Amanda’s has you covered. All of these expert concoctions such as the cranberry infused vodka are made in house, so be prepared for a bold spirits adventure! During my next visit I will be sure to call ahead for a table. If the food is as good as the spirits, I believe we have a real winner on our hands.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion –  Fancy restaurant in the uptown section of Hoboken.

Bar Type – A vintage bar at the front of a restaurant that recaptures the history of Hoboken.

Crowd stereotype – Families and business professionals enjoying a drink and dinner.

Music – No music was playing during my visit.

Value – You won’t find a Happy Hour here. But again, once you sip a glass of their wine you’ll know where the money went.

Good for a….

Date – Amanda’s is perfect to impress that first date for a drink at their classic bar. For those in long term relationships, why not celebrate an anniversary and share some fine wine and a great meal.

Hookup – Sure, you can share a sweet kiss over dinner. But don’t go trying to pull a full on make out session.

Dance – Sorry, busting out your best moves won’t fly at Amanda’s. Better try a lounge way downtown!

Catch up with a friend – Absolutely. Amanda’s laid back yet classy atmosphere provides an environment ripe for long conversations.

First or last drink of the night – Either. A glass of wine in this elegant space is perfect for all points in the evening. Just don’t arrive drunk, this joint is classy.

Overall -  If you are looking for something other than the traditionally young geared Hoboken scene, Amanda’s is your stop. The restaurant recaptures classic, elegant New Jersey dining nightlife like no other spot in the community. I wholeheartedly suggest you take a seat at their well stocked front bar, chat with the highly knowledgeable bartender and dig into their vast wine menu! That being said, I’ll give it a 8.4.

Thursdays in Hoboken can often be better for going out than Friday and Saturday combined. Maybe it’s the thrill of the work week almost hitting it’s climax. Either way, most places along the highly popular Washington Street will be jam-packed even before you get out of the PATH station. That is why checking out places deeper into town may be your best bet for a solid and worry free start to your night out. As we begin to wind down “Spirits in the Sixth Borough” this week’s travels take us off the beaten path to Madison Street and inside “The West Five Supper Club.”

Established in October of 2010 the less than three year old “Supper Club” set up shop in the former space that once housed the very overpriced and full of itself “Lounge 11.” With it’s former inhabitants now far in the rear view mirror, the new proprietors have made a wealth of highly positive changes to bring in the crowds and grow clientele. My Thursday visit into the bar was perfectly timed with their Happy Hour. Needless to say with the walk from the main drag I was quite thirsty. The overly friendly bartender informed me that Yuengling and Coors Light draughts were $2 (til 8pm on weekdays). Half priced cocktails and mixed drinks were on the docket as well. Although both sounded tempting, I opted for a cold pint of, “Yueng.”

The cocktail list at “West Five” reads like a Mixology menu that you would find at a Manhattan speakeasy served by a mustache wearing gent. Instead it exists mere steps away from many of Hoboken’s long standing Italian shops like Fiore’s Deli. Drinks like the “Wrath” ($11) are made with only the freshest seasonal ingredients. The drink features: Ketel One vodka, chambord, pineapple, guava, and fresh grapes. The cocktail list is always expanding, so please check with the bartender for availability.

Hungry? No problem. Sit up at the long, multiple seat front bar to catch a game or in the large, warm colored restaurant space and enjoy some “Thai Style Wings” ($12) tossed in sweet chili, lemongrass, ginger, and served with a side of Indonesian Soy sauce. A far cry from the hot sauce and blue cheese variety indeed. The restaurant area also features a refinished fireplace, cool hanging lights, and even a tree branch sculpture to feed your eyes while you feed everything else. On many nights DJ’s hit The West Five Supper Club’s backroom area spinning danceable tracks from various decades. This space is also ideal for renting out for holiday parties. Make the trip to Madison Street yourself, and chat with the cool bartenders to find out more information. And while you’re there, make sure to grab a pint and tip well!

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion –  Off the beaten path bar with an indistinguishable theme.

Bar Type – A “Jack of all trades” type joint that marries a fully stocked front bar, restaurant, and dance club together.

Crowd stereotype – During Happy Hour there was a few thirty-somethings at the front bar having a drink or two, and one couple in the back having dinner.

Music – Top 40 and danceable hits like LMFAO.

Value – Weekday Happy Hour specials like $2 Yuengling and Coors Light are unbeatable. Ladies will also love half off mixed drinks as well.

Good for a….

Date – You got that right pal. Bring your lady or first date here and impress her with your knowledge of cocktails and eye for trendy decor.

Hookup – Yes, if the former Lounge 11 space has taught us anything, this location is like Spanish fly.

Dance – Totally. DJ’s appear nightly, and if the front area is packed there is a huge back room.

Catch up with a friend – If you want to sit and talk, then go during happy hour and sit up front.

First or last drink of the night – Perfect for a few Happy Hour brews or a full night out.

Overall – Most people who live in or travel to Hoboken tend to stay close to Washington Street when going out for drinks. The West Five Supper Club is all the way down on Madison Street, which can be a challenge for drawing customers who are stuck in the typical Hoboken routine. But with an overly generous weekday Happy Hour special, a full innovative food menu, and a perfect place to dance on the weekends maybe you should consider taking a longer walk to the bar for a change? That being said, I’ll give it a 7.6.

Another week and another bar/restaurant. This week, my journeys bring me right back uptown to Las Olas Sushi Bar and Grill, but for the sake of brevity, we’ll refer to it as Las Olas for the rest of the column. Las Olas is unique in its own right because it is so versatile. Mixing sushi with a tinge of Latin flavorings, Las Olas is a restaurant first despite a sizable standalone bar in the main dining area.

The place is an ideal spot for warm weather gatherings with good amount of tables on the front patio for people watching along Washington Street and an even bigger space in the garden area out back. That’s even before mentioning the fact that the restaurant’s interior is surprisingly huge. Perhaps no spot in Hoboken uses their space more effectively than this one. The décor has sort of a fresh, aquatic feel to it- from the sky blue bar color to the fresh fish being sliced and diced all around you. And although you might not necessarily think to pair a “Chimichirri Skirt Steak” ($25) with Sashimi a la Carte, nothing on the menu seems out of place once you’re seated inside. In fact, you find yourself more overwhelmed with options to choose from.

Dropping into Las Olas on a Monday, I found myself in the midst of their best day for weekly specials. With $3 Asahi draughts and $5 margaritas all day long, it’s easy to get a good buzz going without emptying your entire wallet. But Saturday aside, Las Olas delivers value all week long. We’d advise you to stop in on a Tuesday for their $2 Coronas and $3 Sapporo draughts served all day. My party and I grabbed a table as we had worked up a bit of an appetite and opted not to sit at the bar. So we had a few pops, had a solid meal, and paid our check, hoping that next time we’ll grab a seat outside and enjoy more of what the uptown neighborhood has to offer.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – A strange smattering of food meshing the worlds of Latin fare with sushi rolls.

Bar Type – An eclectic restaurant with a standalone bar.

Crowd stereotype – Mostly small groups of friends or couples in their early 30’s dining outside in front and back.

Music – Energetic crowd noise rather than music, with a focus on the big screen TV nearby.

Value – Unbeatable values depending on which day you drop in. Again, $2 Coronas?!?.

Good for a….

Date – Absolutely a good bet. A perfect sushi spot even for someone who doesn’t care for fish (I’m looking at your picky date) and an even better one for people who do.

Hookup – Go to a bar or a lounge, you clown!

Dance – Not here.

Catch up with a friend – Ideal spot for this.

First or last drink of the night – Stop in for a first drink, have some food, and then head out to some local spots.

Overall – Another in a recent trend of restaurants with a standalone bar, ignoring the food being served is difficult but it shouldn’t necessarily impact the results of my journey whichis strictly ‘to have a drink at each bar in Hoboken.’ That said, Las Olas is a very cool spot with great space both inside and out and serves up some awesome drink specials night in and night out. If you want a bite to nosh on, even better. The place is a solid one (and one we would advise you to stop in to), but looks aisde, the bar itself gets a 7.9.

With just a handful of places left to hit on my trek for a drink at every bar in Hoboken, I’ve come across both new openings and places that have existed for years shuttering, seemingly the day after my visit. Since 1987 however, Baja Mexican Cuisine has proudly served the folks of uptown Hoboken with traditional Mexican fare and some classically made margaritas. Having been there for a relatively cheap dinner before, it was time to grab a stool and sit at the bar for the next stop on my journey through town.

Just a step through the front door and Baja has the feel of a classic Mexican-style cantina. With exposed brick covered up by the array of liquors and tequilas on hand, the narrow bar takes up much of the place’s entrance. The lamps shining overhead resemble those used to heat up food back in the kitchen as old school Mexican music plays in the background. With scant tv’s the the bar area, Baja is not necessarily a spot for game day, but it is more of a restaurant anyway. Just around the nook of the bar sits Baja’s main dining area, decked out with old school paintings and pictures that continue the place’s authentic feel.

Regardless of where you opt to sit, Baja brings out a fresh basket of tasty chips and salsa for you to destroy while slugging down discounted bottles of Dos Equis or whatever you decide upon. The true vale here lies with the place’s legendary $5 margaritas during happy hour, but beers are also affordably priced below $4 for domestics and imports. And if you’re feeling particularly saucy, this is your spot for tequila as Baja sports perhaps the largest selection of Blue Agave Tequilas anywhere- certainly in Hoboken.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – A restaurant that serves affordable Mexican food and some tasty margaritas.

Bar Type – A traditional Mexican cantina.

Crowd stereotype – Not many people hanging around for happy hour, but some early 30’s types sitting outside drinking sangria and a couple sprinkled around the bar.

Music – The traditional Mexican infused guitar strums

Value – Good deals for margaritas and sangria, and comparable beer prices to most spots around the area.

Good for a….

Date – Definitely. Food is both tasty and affordable, and if you live downtown, it’s sort of off the beaten path, so it feels new.

Hookup – Not likely. It’s a restaurant.

Dance – It’s a restaurant!

Catch up with a friend – Absolutely. Come in for dinner or chill out at the bar behind a bowl of tortilla chips and salsa. Nobody’s going to bother you here.

First or last drink of the night – Ideal for a first drink.

Overall – There are bars and there are restaurants. With just a few spots remaining on my bar crawl, most of them are restaurants- which is a good thing because I can catch a glimpse at some places I’ve never eaten at before. Baja Mexican Cuisine is a good for the value Mexican restaurant that serves every dish you would expect to find here. Is it the best or largest bar in Hoboken? No. But if you are looking for an exotic drink after work, or a place to kick back with some affordable pops and Mexican food, you won’t break the bank here. I’ll give it an 8.1.

Uptown Hoboken is arguably where the classier parts of the neighborhood lie. From the cougars at Madison’s, to the newly erected beer hall, to the skyline views from City Bistro’s rooftop, you won’t find many frat boy bars on the north side. Ask anyone where to grab the best steak in Hoboken and the answer is invariably, again and again, Dino and Harry’s. Named one of the top 3 steakhouses in all of New Jersey, the historic spot has sat on this quiet area corner for years and years. Despite some turnover in name alone, the restaurant can still serve a medium rare cut with the best of them.

I sat bar-side after work one night with a couple of my compadres. It was still early so aside from a few tables- and surprisingly a few customers dining at the bar- Dino and Harry’s had not yet had its dinner rush. With Pandora playing some mid-90′s rock we inquired about the happy hour specials and slurped down some well-vodka club sodas from the serious yet amiable bartender- the stiff drink only matched by the manliness of being inside the classic steakhouse.

Inside, the place just has a classic Hoboken feel. It’s a difficult thing to describe, but just knowing the restaurant has been around for so many years and the little things it has- the grand piano as you walk in, an architecturally strange little nook of a room that fits something like three tables, dark wood paneling everywhere, the bright white tablecloths traditional in any steakhouse- all combine for this strange sort of opulence for the area. We only stayed for a few of the $4 drinks, but let’s be honest, you come to Dino and Harry’s for a prime cut of meat. Sitting at the bar only made us hungrier. But one thing is certain here, old school is definitely cool.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – A historic Hoboken bar and restaurant and one of the best steaks in Jersey

Bar Type – Upscale as far as bars go, but typically you aren’t having a drink here unless you can afford dinner. Or unless you’re us.

Crowd stereotype – Some big family dinners, some couples, and some afterwork types dining at the bar solo.

Music – Pandora was killing it with Matchbox Twenty and Third Eye Blind

Value – Drink specials are just okay for Happy Hour. Half price drinks, but you aren’t coming here for cheap brews.

Good for a….

Date – Easy moneybags. Don’t go trying to impress her unless you can afford it. Or unless she’s worth it. But if a girl is bringing you here, start making wedding plans.

Hookup – No. You smell like a perfectly prepared steak and sides. Can’t you meet someone somewhere else?

Dance – Not likely.

Catch up with a friend – Absolutely. Not only that, but perfect for big groups, bachelor parties, or special nights out.

First or last drink of the night – I suppose for Happy Hour if you really wanted to.

Overall – One of the more refined spots in Hoboken, Dino and Harry’s is a special place. Indicative of the borough’s rich history, the place screams New Jersey. It’s a steakhouse. It’s a saloon. And it’s in a great location if you’re up for going out after. The bar alone is serviceable if you’re getting some drinks before dinner, but probably not for a destination. And that’s okay too- no knock on the food, but also not worth a trip uptown just for some drinks. I’ll give the bar a 7.9, but I’m coming back for the filet.

I’d be lying if I said that I miss the former Nine space in Hoboken. The dimly lit, loungy feel inside wasn’t one that suited me all that well during the many visits forced upon me by friends and ex-flames. In the ashes of the former bar has spawned The Cuban, a new restaurant and bar that serves (you guessed it) Cuban style fare. I dropped in with a small group to survey the spot, plop at the bar for a drink, and get a taste of Havana, right on Washington Street.

The first thing to take note of at The Cuban is the outdoorsy, summery vibe, with big green umbrellas and plants being the drawing card. Although it was lightly drizzling during my visit, the place is an ideal one for an outdoor brunch, or to casually relax while nearby places like Black Bear are overcrowded with frat boy types. Inside, the space is clearly more a restaurant than a bar, outfitted with red walls and dark booths and tables, crowded by couples dining on some tasty looking dishes. That’s not to say the bar isn’t notable, however. Down a few stairs, the lengthy bar lines the walk-in area of the place before another massive dining room area in back.

With few minutes to spare, we grabbed a seat and chatted up the friendly bartender, who whipped up a tasty “Caipirinha” for us. Happy hour specials included $3 domestic and imported draughts and bottles and $5 wines and specialty cocktails, which are great values for mixologist inspired concoctions. The Latin music playing in the background just continues the unique setting, sipping on a sweet drink, while the hustle of the neighborhood’s main road is in full swing just a few forgettable steps away. The Cuban might not be a spot to sit at and imbibe all day until you get silly – it’s far too classy a place for that. In fact, I was asked to remove my hat when coming inside, which I honestly did appreciate. So if you feel like stepping it up a notch, the place is absolutely worth visiting; only next time, we’ll make certain to stay for dinner.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – The newest incarnation of a Cuban restaurant in the area.

Bar Type – Upscale to a degree, but a restaurant first and foremost.

Crowd stereotype – Early 30’s couples and families dining.

Music – Latin music.

Value – Happy Hour values are excellent- be it for a beer, cocktail, or a glass of wine. At the top of the value meter for Hoboken bars.

Good for a….

Date – Absolutely bring a date here. It’s likely to be a bit pricey so perhaps it’s best to wait until date two or three though.

Hookup – If the date goes well, sure. Maybe you’ll meet someone at the bar, but this isn’t a spot to cruise for singles.

Dance – Not likely.

Catch up with a friend – Absolutely.

First or last drink of the night – Come in for the first few drinks during Happy Hour. They’re cheap and tasty.

Overall – I have to say that The Cuban is a welcome addition to Hoboken. They’ve been in business for much of 2012, but this was my first trip here and as mentioned, my next will be for dinner. The massive back dining area (outfitted with zebra print booths and large stones affixed to the surrounding walls) is a quiet respite from the busy street, while the rest of the spot transports you to a Cuban style paradise. An urban oasis if you will. I’ll go with an 8.8 and a ‘can’t wait to come back.’

One of Hoboken’s most recognizable images was the faded, illustrated billboard pointing you toward the old Clam Broth House, a staple in the borough that dates to past decades. But as the rest of the area gets rejuvenated so must this formerly iconic staple, and in its ashes rises a new flame. Enter Biggie’s Clam Bar, a massive bar and restaurant that adds a polished touch up to the old neighborhood relic, giving locals and commuters a spot to stop near the Path, but off the beaten path.

The bright red cursive signage flashing out into the street proudly displays the Biggie’s moniker, as several patio tables line the place’s exterior for warm weather days- ideal, if you can secure yourself a seat. Inside, Biggie’s has a very excitable energy about it. Perhaps it was because we ducked in before a recent concert when seemingly every bar was swarming with people, but the area was packed nonetheless. There are flat screens mounted all around the bar area, making this yet another prime place to be on those Sunday afternoons.

Although my party stopped into Biggie’s primarily to check out the bar, we managed to get pretty hungry and after a short wait, plopped down at a table for some food. The place serves up a pretty extensive menu of fresh seafood as well as some hearty sandwiches and comfort foods. Fast forward to us chowing down on a meatball parmesan sandwich and a fresh tuna wrap, and our appetites were immediately appeased. We washed the food down with some of Biggie’s competitive happy hour prices, which differ just about every night of the week. Thursday’s $2 Miller products, and Tuesdays $3 Blue Moon beers are among the highlights, alongside $5 specialty martinis served up every day of the week. After a few Miller Lights, it was time to settle up and head on out.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – This was always a location I took note of, but never managed to patronize. The historic place was and is a Hoboken staple.

Bar Type – More of a restaurant with a big bar setting.

Crowd stereotype – Lots of young families with their kids dining, but the bar was jam packed with groups of friends.

Music – The bar and restaurant were both packed and pretty loud so I couldn’t hear the rest of my party, much less the music.

Value – The values are better on some nights than others, but overall nothing sticks out as much more expensive than any other local bar.

Good for a….

Date – Certainly not the fanciest of spots, but on a tamer night, you can absolutely grab a table for two here.

Hookup – You never know. With a full late night menu and a kitchen open until 12am most nights, buy her those chicken fingers and she’s yours.

Dance – Not on this night.

Catch up with a friend – Probably best suited for this.

First or last drink of the night – Ideal for a first drink, or if you’re stopping before heading into Manhattan.

Overall – This is just one of those places that is part bar and part restaurant that are tough to quantify. The values were fine, the place was packed, the food was acceptable, and it looks like a relatively new bar from the inside. Biggie’s is absolutely fine as a meeting spot for big groups considering the sheer size of the place and of the bar area. But I just don’t know that I got enough out of this visit to warrant a return trip back, when I found other spots to be more accommodating. Until I give it another shot, Biggie’s gets an 8.3 from this humble writer.

One of the toughest parts about being in the city during the summer is the lack of outdoor space. Not everyone has a backyard, a patio, balcony, or roof deck, so enjoying those summertime drinks in an environment that matches is near impossible. However, with Hoboken’s newest pop-up bar, Pier 13 is all about green grass, great views, and top notch beer.

Just a stone’s throw away from the North Hoboken Ferry Stop (on 14th Street) jutting out into the Hudson River at 13th Street and Sinatra Drive is Pier 13, the newest beer garden in the area. Much like the popular Frying Pan in Manhattan, everyone loves a good drink on the Hudson River. Unlike the Frying Pan, Pier 13 isn’t overly packed, isn’t overrun with the Frat crowd, and has great views of NYC. As you walk on down the pier into the “bar” you first come across numerous picnic tables and benches which, depending on when you show up, may or may not be occupied. You will want to work your way to the bar, which is basically a beer truck. However, unlike most beer trucks, this is complete with a full bar. Wine, mixed drinks, and frozen cocktails are all available, but it’s the beer selection that shines. With a wide selection of craft and micro brews, this pop-up bar ranks up there with Hoboken’s best beer stops. Purple Haze, Sweet Action, Philly Pale Ale, and a number of Dogfish Heads brews are all on tap with numerous other bottles to boot. Most beers I found to be $8, with PBR cans being reasonably priced at $4. If the beer line seems long and you want one of the can/bottles, sneak further down the pier and there is a waitress with ice coolers full of beer (cash only).

We showed up here early on a Saturday night, around 6 PM for a few pre-dinner drinks. It was a picture perfect night and the Pier was filling up nicely. However instead of the common Hoboken 20-somethings, the scene was split between young families and the typical 20 somethings. It was kinda shocking and fun watching parents enjoying a couple of beers with their friends as their young children were playing with other children on the pier. Kids were enjoying playing tag in the grass. Other adults were having a couple beers in the lounge chairs that Pier 13 provided. There was a great sense of community out on the waterfront, which I appreciate.  While no food is served by Pier 13, you can bring your own chips and dip, or grab some food from the food trucks that stop nearby like Luke’s Lobster and Hoboken’s own Taco Truck, which have been known to frequent the area.  I had a couple of Summer Blondes and enjoyed my time way out on the river, with the city so close, you could almost touch it.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – I had heard a lot of good things since their 4th of July opening, but I figured that since everyone was talking about it that it would be overrun by the frat crowd. I was definitely wrong!

Bar Type – Beer Garden

Crowd stereotype – Lots of young families with their kids and other large groups of friends.

Music – They had a DJ that was one of the best I’ve heard spinning at a bar.  Definitely helped to make for a better spot by mixing the fun songs that everyone knew and not house music which makes you cringe.

Value – Only downside, $4 PBRs are a little high. $10 mixed drinks and $8 high quality beers is probably on target, but definitely not a great value.

Good for a….

Date – Bring them, it’s a great place to double, to relax and talk.

Hookup – Maybe you will end up meeting someone here.

Dance – Little kids were grooving to the music, but I don’t think you want to be dancing out there.

Catch up with a friend – Great

First or last drink of the night – Closes fairly early cause of noise issues (11PM M-Sat, 10 PM on Sundays) with the neighbors so it’s a better first drink than a last drink.

Overall – Definitely has been a major addition to the Hoboken bar scene. Being so close to the ferry and the bus has made this a place even people from NYC are willing to come to…and they should as it might beat out any outdoor venue in Manhattan. Relaxing crowd, good music, and a deep beer list it’s a perfect mix. Great for one of those afternoon weekend heavy drinking days. Get yourself a tan, bring in some food and cozy up on a beach chair or 2. Get some great happy hour specials and this could be as close to a 10 as you could get. Hurry up and get over to Pier 13 before the summer is done and it closes up.… I’ll give it an 9.5.

Some of Hoboken’s best bars are ones off the beaten path. And some are so ingrained on their neighborhood block that they are literally built right into a small house. Such is the case with McMahon’s Brownstone Ale House, serving up cheap brews and shots since 1995. Another in a line of fine Irish pubs, McMahon’s has a charm all its own. With just a few places remaining on this seemingly endless Hoboken bar crawl, I find myself left with some bars I’m visiting for the very first time. And after dropping by McMahon’s, it’s hard to fathom that I’ve never popped in here for a drink before.

Inside, the long wooden bar seems to take up the place’s entire space with exposed brick along the walls on the opposite side. Above the bar sit a couple of sports jerseys hung overhead while some pictures line the brick, but McMahon’s is hardly known for their decor. What’s actually refreshing is that the place doesn’t jam the “Irish” down your throat. Instead they rely on being a good old fashioned dive and sports bar. Owner, bartender, and former Belfast soccer player Francis, is perhaps the nicest guy I’ve met during my travels. With two buddies to my side, we ponied up to the bar, chatted up the old chap, and shared some war stories. What actually happened was, McMahon’s was having a karaoke night and we spent about 3 hours singing with some friendly likeminded strangers. While the howls of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” Mr. Big’s “To Be With You,” and- a karaoke staple- Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler” were likely driving patrons to other places, we were having a blast.

Aside from your typical Hoboken happy hour values, the space also houses a pool table in the back. So grab a $4 import or a $2 domestic draught from Francis, pop a few quarters on the table and chalk up that cue, for one of Hoboken’s most unheralded and underrated bars.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – A virtual unknown. I had never passed by the bar or had heard from anyone who had been there.

Bar Type – A really fun sports bar with an Americanized Irish pub feel.

Crowd stereotype – Neighborhood locals. Solid, but small mix of late twenty somethings

Music – The karaoke was a-flowing.

Value – Good, reasonable happy hour specials- $2 domestics and $4 import beers.

Good for a….

Date – Come on dude. Take her somewhere nice.

Hookup – When the place fills up, you betcha. Some call it the luck of the Irish. Others argue that you just get drunk and make out.

Dance – Here and there, but this is more a sports bar than a place to shake your massive behind.

Catch up with a friend – An excellent place for this.

First or last drink of the night – It’s not the most convenient place for bouncing around to bars, but definitely works for either.

Overall – McMahon’s Brownstone Ale House is a hidden Hoboken gem. Pool table? Check. Good specials? Check. Friendly, family run bar with an interesting bar staff? Check. It’s a bar that doesn’t stand out as anything special, until you’re inside, getting your drink on, and having the time of your life. Well, that’s a little strong but it is a place worth going out of your way for. Our first visit will certainly not be our last. 8.6.

While many local watering holes have the distinction of being dubbed Irish pubs, there is perhaps none more authentic in Hoboken than Willie McBride’s. Located off the beaten path, Willie’s stands out as a place you’d stumble upon while walking the streets of Dublin- a loud, ostentatious exterior, equipped with flags hanging overhead, signs featuring full pours of Guinness, and the requisite chalkboard featuring the specials of the night. Unfortunately there are scant bars within proximity to Willie’s. But fortunately for you, the bar is so massive and fun that it’s unlikely you’ll need to head anywhere else.

Inside, the first thing you take note of is the lengthy half-horseshoe shaped bar, backed by some of the friendliest most engaging bartenders anywhere in Hoboken. The surrounding walls are drenched with Irish tchotchkes from four leaf clovers to booze-laden paraphernalia, under the glare of the 18 high definition TVs throughout the place. And if you can manage a seat at the front bar, Willie’s is an ideal destination for sporting events. Overhead sits a walkable balcony which looks down upon the bar and again, harkens back to a boisterous Dublin bar scene. Perhaps most notable about Willie’s is that, because of its relatively veiled location, the bar offers free weekend shuttle service (via limo!) to the its front door- the only place in Hoboken that I can think of with that kind of service.

When the front bar is full- and it certainly gets packed- the back room is massive. An ideal place to host a private party, the back area is outfitted with table seating and a pool table, but is flexible enough to be suited for a karaoke night for amateurs or a stage setup for live music. Best of all, the drink specials in either bar rival some of Hoboken’s finest with Miller Lite draughts being poured at $2 a pop every day of the week. I managed to secure a seat, slug down a few brews, share a laugh with a couple of Zog Sports girls, had some tasty jalapeno poppers (from their long list of $5 appetizers), flirt with the bartenders, and head out for the night. And when all was said and done, my bill was STILL dirt cheap.

So here’s the rundown…

Preconceived notion – Your run of the mill Hoboken bar- cheap brews, young people.

Bar Type – A much more traditional and authentic Irish bar than I had remembered. Having not been here in years, the bar space rivals The Shannon’s in sheer size, which is saying something.

Crowd stereotype – Post-work locals, skewing a little bit older. During normal drinking hours though, the place gets packed with younger peeps.

Music – A decent mix of Top 40 songs and rock.

Value –Unbelievably so. $2 Miller Lites every day coupled with values on Coors Lights, Newcastles, and on Mondays- $9 for a burger and beer. But make no mistake- this is a beer bar.

Good for a….

Date – Eh. You can do better for a date night. But if you’re looking for some casual bar fare with someone you’ve been out with a bunch, the menu options are vast.

Hookup – Yessir! When the place gets poppin’ so do the buttons on your fly. Just don’t blow it.

Dance – In the back bar with a DJ? Yes. In the front bar, on a Thursday night at 8 with a bunch of local electricians sitting around watching skiing on ESPN? No.

Catch up with a friend – Definitely. Willie McBride’s lends itself to little pockets for conversation.

First or last drink of the night – You can’t really go wrong with either. The location is spread out from a bunch of other bars so you might be better off starting here. But as a final destination or a pop in for a last drink, Willie’s is fine for that too.

Overall – It’s not the nicest bar in Hoboken, but it’s certainly a step above your run of the mill dive bar. It’s been said that if you’re a jack of all trades, you’re a master of none but Willie McBride’s seems to have it all down pat. You can find that night out dancing, that night out for casual boozing with buddies, the place to watch a game and guzzle down cheap brews- all inside Willie McBride’s. And you can get a free limo ride there on weekends to boot. One of my perennial favorite bars in Hoboken; it’s just a shame that I needed this trip back over to remind me of how great it is. 9.1.
