For a glimpse of upcoming events that we’ll be covering, check out the calendar in our side bar to your right. Otherwise, here are a few highlights to check out in and around Manhattan this weekend!
Arts & Culture
Friday, August 30th – Monday, September 2nd – Enjoy the last remaining days of the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit at Washington Square Park. More than 100 different artists, painters and crafters head outdoors to place their artistic creations on sale to the masses. You can find them here just this weekend and next, so make your way over during one of the last beautiful days of summer.
Friday, August 30th – Monday, September 2nd- Well with such a mass exodus per usual Labor Day Weekend, at least sports are sticking around. The US Open is in full swing out in Flushing Queens as Arthur Ashe Stadium shows the world why New York is so special. Tickets to the day and night sessions are available as the tournament heats up all weekend long. Remember when Martina Hingis was like, a big deal? (2013 US Open Tickets)
Friday, August 30th – Monday, September 2nd – As we approach the season’s final month, the playoffs are still within reach for the Yankees. But they’ll need to finish off this weekend’s rivals the Orioles of Baltimore and the White Sox who come to town on Monday. A-Rod and Jeter are back. Soriano has found the fountain of youth. But can they hang on to make one last run for Mo Rivera? This weekend could tell us everything that we need to know. (Yankees Tickets)
Music & Entertainment
Friday, August 30th – Movie release day. Quiet night tonight? Check out the films opening this weekend. Um, “Getaway” (PG-13) with Ethan Hawke and (gulp) Selena Gomez? And “One Direction: This is Us” (PG)? You know what? Just rent something.
Friday, August 30th – Sunday, September 1st – In August, the city can be a zoo. This weekend, take that literally. Musically, the entire weekend in New York City is all about the 2013 “Electric Zoo Festival” as Randall’s Island is transformed into New York’s biggest electronic music festival. And with three full days of nonstop action, thousands of locals will be celebrating at each of the festival’s two main stages along with Avicii, Danny Tenaglia, Benny Benassi, Baauer, Tiesto, Bassnectar, David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, and Steve Aoki. Who?? (Electric Zoo Tickets)
Friday, August 30th – Sunday, September 1st –With the Zoo mentioned above, there are after parties each night all over town. If you ain’t feelin’ the zoo, try the rooftop at The Delancey aka the DL Rooftop Lounge for the STAR Vodka End of Summer Party. With a fashion show and music courtesy of DJ Serebe, the party rages until 2am. Meanwhile, Sunday is a fun filled rooftop party of another sort- the Empire Hotel says goodbye to summertime at 10pm with its “Labor Day Sunday Party.” There’s beautiful views, a posh lounge, and drink specials all night too. Pop that collar and blow out that hair- it’s party time.
Saturday, August 31st – Head to Union Pool in Brooklyn on Saturday. ”Summer Thunder” brings experimental music to the outdoor wet spot in the latest of free outdoor music shows. You’ll find familiar named players Thurston Moore, and Nate Wooley performing live as you dance around like a complete clown.
