Arts & Culture

Friday, January 13th – Monday, January 16th- The Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Jewish Museum present the New York Jewish Film Festival. It all runs until January 26th, but there’s plenty of excellent films showing this weekend. ( Jewish Film Festival )

Saturday, January 14th- Head out to Gowanus this weekend for a mini art fair bringing together the best in music, theater, art, and independent thinking. Between 6 and 7, admission is free, and afterwards is only ten bucks. But there’s going to be enough to see and experience that makes these indoor festivals special enough to hold in the winter time. From burlesque to live music, there’s not going to be any weird stone left unturned. ( Gowanus Art Fair )

Sports

Sunday, January 15th- If you’re a sports fan and need to be told that this is a huge weekend for football, you need a smack upside the head. At 4:30 Sunday, the New York Giants travel out to Green Bay to take on the Packers from Lambeau Field in a Divisional Playoff contest. It’s lose and you go home for Big Blue. Can Eli & Company keep the dream alive? Watch it at The East End, a Giants bar on the Upper East Side, who have a $25 unlimited drafts and half price wings for 5 hours. ( The East End )

Sunday, January 15th – Monday, January 16th- Big weekend for basketball in and around the city this weekend. On Sunday, join the St. John’s Red Storm host Georgetown live from Madison Square Garden at noon. And stick around for a double dip as the St. John’s women’s team hosts Marquette on the same floor. Back to back St. John’s basketball, all for one affordable price at the Garden. ( St. John’s Double Header ) Care more about the big boys? Monday is matinee day around the league as the NBA celebrates Martin Luther King Day. It’s a 1pm tipoff as A’Mare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony and your New York Knicks host the Dwight Howard led Orlando Magic, also at the Garden in an early season battle of Eastern Conference supremacy. Music & Entertainment

Friday, December 13th- Movie release day. Quiet night tonight? Check out these releases coming out today. “Contraband” (R) starring Mark Wahlberg in a ploy to run to Panama, to retrieve a treasure of counterfeit bills to settle a long standing debt for his brother in law, who owes drug lord Giovanni Ribisi a great deal of scratch. Also, in limited release, Meryl Streep stars as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” (PG-13). If you haven’t read our review of this one, check out our homepage. And finally, Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast” (G) returns to big screens- this time, in 3D. The same timeless songs around the classic story of a beautiful woman falling in love with disgusting beast. Don’t blame us if you hate them all.

Friday, January 13th- Monday, January 16th- It’s a light concert schedule over the long holiday weekend, but here are a few highlights. Tonight, the Music Hall of Williamsburg hosts Monster Magnet, performing album “Dopes to Infinity” in its entirety. Don’t worry, they’re still going to “Kick Out the Jams,” as well as all of their hit songs. Tickets are just $18.50. (Monster Magnet Tickets) Sunday night, join Black Thought of The Roots for S.O.B.’s Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. It’s just $20 and it makes a day that we’re all off from work a little more memorable, by keeping Dr. King’s memory alive. (S.O.B.’s MLK Celebration) Finally, if you were lucky enough to grab tickets earlier today, Monday night, the Music Hall of Williamsburg hosts Santigold in the first of two sure to be packed shows at the historic Brooklyn venue. The eclectic young artist is headlining prior to her upcoming opening run for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so catch her before she takes off for arenas in 2012. (Santigold Tickets)

Friday, January 13th- Jersey Shore icon Snooki is in New York City tonight! If you’re a girl or you like looking at them, head over to McFadden’s in midtown, drop $30 and try to become one of Snooki’s Ring Girls. Monday, January 16th- Let 2012 be a new year. How many more times can you try to pick up other people in dingy bars unsuccessfully? Head to sideBAR on Monday at 7 for a Singles Networking Party called Let’s Play.
