Portugal. The Man
The Studio At Webster Hall, New York, NY
June 6, 2011

Portland’s own, Portugal. The Man have been making a name for themselves for the past few years with their unique blend of psychedelic-rock. And in a crowded music scene it is of the utmost importance for artists to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. Last night, the band commanded a sold out crowd at New York City’s Studio At Webster Hall, thrilling fans and roping in new die-hards from previously casual listeners.

Shortly after 8pm, the band took the stage to thunderous cheers and applause. This would be a one off show for them, as they continue traveling the United States through the end of the week before heading off to Germany. With little banter to the crowd, they quickly launched into “M80,” and like a 1970′s rock show, a smoke machine unleashed a thick mist cloud, while laser lights jutted out into the audience. It was a great combination of a visual feast and a sick opener to get us moving.

To say Portugal. The Man’s fanbase is loyal would be a tremendous understatement. The crowd hung on every word out of lead singer John Gourley’s mouth.  Having only heard Portugal. The Man’s studio work, we had no idea what to expect from their live show. And after this performance, it became clear that this is a band that you simply must see live. Even if you’re a metal head like me, you will be satisfied as the heavy, complex riffs and breakdowns complimented the entire set.

Portugal. The Man will be making their second appearance at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival 10 year anniversary later this month as well as an appearance in Chicago at Lollapalooza in August.  Their latest “In The Mountain, In The Cloud” is slated for a July 19th release, and is the major label debut from a band we’re certain you’ll be hearing more from as 2011 rolls on.
