The Scoop:  One of springtime’s annual rites of passage is headed back to New York City next weekend.  Tasked with fundraising to keep up the beautification of one of the City’s most desired neighborhoods, New Taste of the Upper West Side celebrates its 10^th spectacular year in style.  Fortunately, the main beneficiary here are the ticketholders who will be treated to two outstanding evenings of incredible eats and drinks underneath a sprawling tent on Columbus Avenue.  It all kicks off on Friday evening, May 19^th, where television personality Adam Richman and famed Chef Alex Guarnaschelli (Butter) again return to host ‘Summer in the City: Surf & Turf.’  For three full hours, attendees will be fed by the likes of some of the most masterful culinary hands that the neighborhood has to offer.  From Black Tap to 5 Napkin Burger, Han Dynasty to Isabella’s, Shake Shack to Serafina and a couple dozen more!

Saturday evening, the food-focused action intensifies even further with ‘Best of the West.’  Honoring famed business partners Chef April Bloomfield (The Breslin, Salvation Burger) and Ken Friedman and hosted by ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Jesse Palmer, the evening will celebrate a decade of fine dining, tasty spirits and backed by the sounds of DJ Price.  Among the forty plus chefs coming out for this one – Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Jean-Georges), Joe Ng (RedFarm), John Fraser (Dovetail), Jacques Torres (Jacques Torres Chocolate), Alex Garcia (AG Kitchen) will all be representing their tables, interacting with guests amid the festivities.  Both affairs will sell out – do yourself a favor and secure your tickets here!

The space at SoHo’s French Cheese Board is part cheese shop, part gallery, part hangout spot.  Primary among these is, unsurprisingly, the cheese: pictures of cheese sculptures adorn the walls that are not displaying a giant map of France by cheese region or a diagram of various cheese making processes.  And the events table is designed so that hands can reach a cheese board placed at the center from any point.  If we seem to be experts on the space it’s because we trekked downtown on Wednesday evening for a ‘Beer and Cheese’ tasting experience that left us with renewed interest in two areas in which we had previously dubbed ourselves ‘experts.’

At first glance our hosts blended in with the assembled crowd on hand, casually setting up the requisite selection of beers and cheeses we were about to enjoy.  The relaxed atmosphere was a bit of a surprise given the subject matter, and I was a bit ashamed to have anticipated it being unapproachable (sorry, French things).  After a few minutes of mulling about, we were brought together by, what else, cheese.  Generous tasting plates were passed out as Beer Expert John Holl reminded us that, “Beer and cheese have been enjoyed together, and in many ways, more sensibly than wine and cheese, for centuries.”  Bold start, but we were interested, if for no other reason than to see if he was right (note: he certainly wasn’t wrong).  After a quick intro on how to properly approach beer tasting (it involves a technique called the ‘Bloodhound method’ of smelling aromas, my preference over the ‘drive-by’ approach), Holl jumped right into our pairings.

The tasting was designed to move from light to heavy in both beer and cheese characteristics.  We started with a Belgian-style pale ale from AleSmith called “Lil’ Devil” paired with the ever-popular Brie.  While many serve this cheese with various accompaniments like jams and honey, its flavors were more subtly enhanced by this pairing.  Its buttery notes were balanced with the ale’s spice, while its earthiness was echoed by biscuits and a touch of honey without the sweetness.  The next cheese, Brillat Savarin, was a gradual step in intensity.  The rich, salty and ever-so-slightly sour triple cream made from cow’s milk was paired with “Aunt Sally,” a sour ale from Lagunitas Brewing Company.  This was the most interesting combination to us because it was the physical nature of the beer that really elevated the pairing.  The carbonation in the beer cleared the palette for each successive creamy bite, allowing us to pick up more and more flavors.  The beer itself was also enhanced by the cheese, its richness providing a platform for the tart, “candy-bowl” and nutty flavors (there was a long discussion about the similarities to those little strawberry candies that appear in every grandmother’s purse as soon as her first grandchild is born. It was, surprisingly, not inaccurate).  The cheese disappeared from most of the tasting plates before Holl could inform us that we might want to save a bite to pair with the last beer, an equally delightful pairing for the end of a meal.

First, however, came the bright orange Mimolette cheese paired with a Barleywine.  From Weyerbacher brewery in Easton, PA, this 11.1% abv brew called the “Blithering Idiot” didn’t manage to turn us into one, but can be a dangerous beverage when enjoyed so fully with a cheese like the Mimolette.  Holl described the pairing as “a complete cheese board” with stone fruit and malt flavors from the beer and sweet and nutty notes from the hard cheese.   The cheese itself has an interesting history.  Developed by Louis XIV to replace the popular – but imported from a warring Netherlands – Edam cheese, Mimolettemore recently gained notoriety for being banned from the US.  The mite content on the crust of the cheese was too high; it could cause an overreaction if consumed in large quantities, a legitimate concern based on how much we ate at the tasting.  Between the high alcohol content of the brew and the formerly criminal cheese, this dangerous pairing could quickly inspire some raucous activity (or more likely, a nap).

Speaking of dangerous combinations, the tasting was wrapped up with a Bleu d’Auvergne cheese and an Imperial Stout, a rich and assertive pairing.  Both confident in their own right, this pair managed to highlight each component’s strengths.  Certainly rich, this combo would best be enjoyed at the end of a meal as a final taste.  The chocolate, oak and bourbon flavors of Hoppin’ Frog Barrel’s Aged B.O.R.I.S. would be delightful on its own, but is balanced by the tangy notes of the Bleu cheese.   Personally, I never would have thought of pairing these two.  This is why I was not leading the tasting.  After some generous refills of cheese boards and cups, our hosts answered our questions and encouraged us to try our own pairings.

Event: Project by Project’s ‘Plate By Plate’

The Scoop:  More than 200 guests will mesh food and philanthropy during Friday evening’s 2016 Plate by Plate event.  Organized by nonprofit organization Project by Project (PbP) at the posh Metropolitan Pavilion, some of New York City’s finest restaurants like Toloache, Vai, Thalassa, Annisa and more will be surrounded by beers, sakes and spirits (Asahi Beer, Kikusui Sake, Tiger Beer, Suntory Whisky Toki) for a three hour tasting frenzy.  The organization works with a different charity partner each year as its beneficiary, from the tickets sold and from the incomparable array of silent auction items distributed.  This year’s net proceeds will benefit NQAPIA, National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance, a group that promotes visibility, develops leadership and challenges homophobia and racism in our communities. On those grounds alone, PbP is certainly worth attending – the food and drink are just icing on the cake.

Event: Thrillist Food Presents ‘Empire Oyster’

The Scoop: One of Williamsburg’s most unique event spaces will be outfitted with empty shells and beer cups with the return of Thrillist’s Empire Oyster, a three hour feast that meshes New York restaurants and seafood dishes with beers from Blue Point Brewing Company.  Just $75 gets you inside the fun-filled affair for an afternoon that will surely beat out the most festive of bottomless brunch affairs.  Indulge in excellent eats from Swine, Schiller’s Liquor Bar, Seabird, Soju Haus and plenty more to be announced- alongside thousands and thousands of oysters from Lake Montauk to Kumamoto and everywhere in between.  Nobody throws a party like the folks at Thrillist and Saturday afternoon will be no different in the Burg!

By day the sizable downtown space is a coffee shop and a comfortable café. By night, the dart boards and foosball tables become occupied and the place becomes a full-on game room and gastropub. The setting inside of Fulton Street’s Lot 77 is one that evokes a walk down memory lane, to the days of studying inside of a communal collegiate lounge of sorts. Except here, ice cold beer and glasses of wine are also poured and the Asian-inspired menu offers a bevy of tasty menu items.

Though the entrance at Lot 77 is a bit hidden if you aren’t looking for it, the dearth of bars and pubs in the surrounding area makes the place certainly one worth seeking out. A sure-fire good time for area residents, Lot 77 is distinctive for all that it offers- for that overly competitive friend who’s a gaming fan, a sprawling setup for non-drinkers looking to unwind and a quiet and comfortable place to grab a coffee and study or freelance without the nuisances that can often come with more popular public places.

A recent downtown visit brought us to the Lott 77 entryway, which opens up into a massive café serving pastries and coffees- well lit up and with plenty of tables and seats for folks to camp out for a couple of hours. The offering of free WiFi on site only adds to the already welcoming atmosphere, with some light music being piped in overhead as the variety of coffee drinks are carefully being prepared. As day changes to night though, gone are the ceramic mugs and in their place, come the clanking of glasses, the smashing of pool balls and a bevy of far louder activity. Guests slug down pours of suds and refreshing alcoholic drinks courtesy of the place’s frozen drink machine as they dig into a fairly complex menu.

Items like “Sambal Cheese Dip with Pretzel Bread & Pickles” ($7) and a “Spicy Tuna, Radish & Sesame” Ssam ($15) are particularly distinctive standouts- but considering that the space isn’t a ‘bar’ in a traditional sense, it’s fitting that the menu here would be particularly unique. Moreover, the “Wings” (1/2 pound – $9) here are particularly tasty, lacquered in a smattering of fish sauce, garlic and lime and served with a miso-buttermilk ranch on the side. The meaty and juicy wings were intensely flavorful, though candidly, the savory “5-Spice Beef Sliders” ($9) topped with a creamy Szechuan aioli and a pickled cucumber was likely the best dish that we sampled- washing each hearty bite down with a slug from a Corona bottle.

On a relatively slow weeknight in New York City, finding ourselves in a place that’s part restaurant, part café and part lounge proved particularly fulfilling. Though we can’t toss a dart to save our lives, there were plenty of other things going on at Lot 77 to keep us both occupied and entertained at all times. Spacious and casual, it’s a useful space that provides guests with a multitude of different options- with or without booze.

Curated as one part artistic showcase and one part tasting exhibit, the French Cheese Board would celebrate its official re-opening on Thursday on the west side of Midtown. One of the founding members of the esteemed ‘Eat Art Movement,’ the works of French artist Dorothee Selz would be unveiled in an ornate and interactive display for dozens of guests to enjoy during the opening night festivities, kicking off a five week run at the space which lasts until November 15th. Incredibly unique and organically colorful, the experience of tasting some of the food being served was nothing compared to the sheer sights intricately spread throughout the space.

Almost immediately, we were greeted by a sizable and playful bright red shape welcoming us inside of the space. The surprised look captured on our faces brought over a tour guide to give us a brief walk through of the exhibition and more importantly, a history lesson of the Food Art Movement. Selz began in the 1970’s, where artists wanted to show that art was not just for the elite, but could be appreciated by everyone. Fitting examples were strewn all around the space from different canvases, art boards and sculptures that highlighted some of the artist’s more approachable works.

Guests were actually encouraged to touch some of the sculptures- typically a no-no in the art world- but here, we learned that the soft bases of each work were made of sugar. While we were completely satisfied in touching them, we were admittedly a bit more hesitant to grab the many pieces of colorful candy, cheeses and fruits that were sticking out of them. Not that we weren’t allowed — we just didn’t want to take away from the aesthetic beauty of these works of art. Fortunately, the folks at the French Cheese Board provided a delicious cheese display of their own toward the back of the room- one that we joined some likeminded guests in indulging upon. After having our fill of all the bright artwork for the time-being, it certainly seemed time to sample some cheese.

Rich and creamy themselves, the cheeses managed to be surpassed by the array of breads that also acted as works of art of their own. Arranged in many different beautiful patterns, the soft slices were almost too pretty to eat, but we needed something to pair with each cheese. While each cheese was creamy and satisfying, our hands down favorite was the “Bleu D’Auverne,” a rich cheese with a really pronounced taste. The breads were a bit harder to discern given their wild assortment of colors and styles, but a walnut raisin variety served as the perfect complement for the soft ‘Bleu’ that seemed to be a real crowd favorite.

As we did another walk-through, we made sure to pause briefly for a pour of some refreshing bubbly, as we watched a short video which described the bread making process. It turns out that the second walk-through was a necessary step considering how many small details we had missed the first time around. With pours of Champagne pairing with eccentric art and a selection of cheeses, you’d be hard pressed to find a more satisfying evening even for the most casual art lover. And with a month left in the exhibit, you’d better figure out a way to make your way over to the newly re-opened French Cheese Board, where art tastes as good as it looks.

New York City has everything and fortunately just about any time we leave the comforts of our cramped apartments, we’re usually headed toward something of interest. Wednesday evening, a quick trip into Brooklyn would bring us to a festive launch party, celebrating a brand new website with a unique concept. The idea, new to New York City, is an online community and marketplace dubbed Craft Spirits Exchange, a portal that incorporates reviews of different liquors, booze and various bottled alcohols be it from larger manufacturers or tiny local companies. The site also includes cocktail recipes, lists of awards received and local events for the craft spirits lovers in your area. Most importantly, you can also purchase the spirits directly from the website which allows CSX to become a hybrid of Trip Advisor, Yelp and Amazon all combined into one and completely dedicated to spirits.

Wednesday evening’s launch party was hosted at Brooklyn’s New York Distilling Company where the sprawling setting surrounded guests with bottling machinery and barrels along with several booths stocked with samples of rich spirits being poured by knowledgeable brand representatives. Each station utilized specific instructions to invite attendees to log in to CSX and get the ball rolling by reviewing what we had tasted in truly interactive fashion. Just as impressively, right outside the venue, literally on the sidewalk, was parked none other than The Taco Truck- a welcome sight for guests filing into the space. Their “Carnitas” tacos were served piping hot, setting the table for some autumn weather drinking.

Once inside, our first stop was Siembra Spirits, where three different tequilas were being poured. Though we’ve become shell-socked by the very thought of tequila following some painful morning hangovers in college- the Siembra “Valles” was a smooth style that we were sweet-talked into tasting.  Fortunately, none of the nightmarish characteristics that we remembered existed in this easy-drinking sip.  Next, we moved on to Tuthilltown Spirits, where we were offered two of their vodkas and one gin. Distilled out of upstate New York, we were especially impressed by their “Indigenous,” a fresh pressed apple vodka created with 100% New York apples. We also enjoyed their delicious cocktail using “Half Moon Orchard Gin,” made from New York wheat and apples but when infused with the cinnamon in the cocktail, it was the perfect drink for the first cool night of the season.

Although New York Distilling Company was certainly a gracious host, they were also on hand to serve some of their homegrown spirits. While we enjoyed their selection of gins (“Dorothy Parker American Gin” and “Perry’s Tot Strength Gin”), our favorite tasting of the evening was the “Mister Katz’ Rock and Rye.” As big fans of whiskey, we were thrilled to try this new favorite of ours: rye whiskey & rock candy sugar- a sticky and sweet liquor that would taste deliciously when drowning a single sizable cube of ice. Without hesitation, we returned for seconds. As the evening of tasting commenced, we were walked through a live demonstration of CSX to check out its exceptional functionality and practicality. Both easy to use and relatively intuitive, CSX is certain to join our growing list of bookmarked sites.

Among some of the other delicious tastings of the evening that we savored, Compass Box Whisky Co.’s served five different varieties- two of which, “Oak Cross” (scotch whiskey with vanilla, clove, and fruity characteristics), and their grain whiskey, “Hedonism” were special standouts. At the Mezan table meanwhile, Warren Bobrow was a terrific host talking our team through the variety of different rums being poured before serving the evening’s best tasting cocktail- fresh with carrot juice, royal rose, orange bitters, seltzer, and rosemary sprig. It was the perfect blend of sweet with a nice kick of spice on the back end. Finally, we wrapped up our evening with the folks from Kings County Distillery. Against our better judgment, we managed to sip on each of their three delicious samples- “Moonshine,” “Bourbon” and their “Chocolate-Flavored Whiskey,” which left us swooning. Almost immediately, we took stock of the local places in our neighborhood where the Kings County varieties are available, earmarking them for weekend visits. In all, we managed to taste some absolutely delicious new spirits brands, met some likeminded folks and uncovered an inventive new website and community all in the course of a single evening. Though we sometimes take it for granted, it sure is good to live in New York City.

More than one hundred different craft beers will be on display for the tasting on Saturday, September 26th at one of the season’s most diverse and exciting booze-fueled festivals. The Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint plays as the newest host to the Village Voice’s 5th Annual ‘Brooklyn Pour,’ a fall classic that combines suds, eats and festivities for three action packed hours. If you’ve never had the opportunity to experience any of the event’s previous happenings- well, you’ve still got time to pick up some general admission or VIP tickets to the smorgasbord for beer lovers.

A commemorative tasting glass gets you in on the action- where your outstretched arm will lead your journey through the jam packed festival. Whether you’re a more casual or expert beer drinker, a lover of microbrews or more traditional varieties, ‘Brooklyn Pour’s’ got a cavalcade of different options for any taste. Local breweries like Coney Island Brewing, Queens Brewery, Sixpoint Craft Ales, Alphabet City Brewing Company and Brooklyn Brewery join international beermakers Asahi, Krombacher and Weihenstephan just to name a few brands slated to be poured on site. And if you’re not typically a beer fan? No problem. ACE Premium Hard Ciders, Angry Orchard, Downeast Cider House and Rekorderlig Cider and Crabbie’s Ginger Beer are some delicious alternatives should more traditional beers not be your thang.

Aside from the sea of suds slated to fill the Expo Center, Q104.3 on air personality Jonathan Clarke will DJ and emcee the afternoon as games and photo booths are sure to fill the remaining open areas of the sizable venue. Tickets for the 5th Annual ‘Brooklyn Pour’ are available now. Don’t get shut out, because an event of this size and caliber goes down but once a year.

A whopping six hundred pages jam packed with materials compiled by more than three hundred contributors spanning shows from thirty countries.  Though long time fans of iconic Seattle grunge act Soundgarden will likely drool at the mere thought of the hundreds of eye-popping photos and live performance recaps that spanned the group’s highly anticipated 2010 reformation and subsequent reunion tours, there’s plenty to get excited about for the everyday rock music fan as well.  Best of all though, is that the eight pound coffee table style art book entitled “Photofantasm Soundgarden: Nudedragons to King Animal” is a collection of works provided by some of the group’s most passionate fans, professionally and meticulously captured in one comprehensive place.

The sheer imagery included inside the limited edition hardcover book alone is well worth its sticker price.  Authors Jaye and Mike English have gone to painstaking detail to cull tens of thousands of professional and fan photos in order to piece together a five year glimpse of the parade of Soundgarden band members, friends and followers at each stop along their critically acclaimed reunion.  Coupled with the unique intricacies of each stop’s venue, each city’s audience and each stage’s elaborate design, “Photofantasm” is a truly unique look at a complete touring experience from the fan’s perspective.  The entire build-up to the band’s long awaited return is captured here in complete fashion and though a mere book can certainly do no justice to the live experience, “Photofantasm” does as admirable a job as one can expect given the solely visual parameters that a collection of photos and essays can encompass.

Promotional show posters, fun facts and an array of different setlists contribute additional detail for long time and dedicated fans, while the unparalleled and colorful shots of the band in various countries are punctuated by the fan experiences of having witnessed them live.  Meanwhile, notable nuggets from contributors like Korn, Duff McKagan, Kevin Martin, Pepper Keenan, Myles Kennedy and Serj Tankian allow the group’s lasting aura and legacy to be put in perspective for the more casual listener.  The tattered, sweat covered t-shirts and curly now graying locks of the band’s members might not be able to fully capture Matt Cameron‘s smashing drums or guitarist Kim Thayil‘s iconically rocking guitar riffs- or the unmistakable sound of a sold out arena filled with fans waiting more than a decade for their favorite band’s return to prominence- but “Photofantasm” is about as personalized a fan experience as one can enjoy in book form.  And with each turn of the page, it’s easy to imagine frontman Chris Cornell‘s unmistakable vocals captivating a sold out audience of thousands, all from the comfort of the reader’s very own couch.

Be it for romance or for sheer warm weather pleasure, there’s nothing like boarding a boat and cruising around the isle of Manhattan in summertime. Since the early 2000′s Manhattan By Sail’s fleet has been showcasing the beauty of New York City and its surroundings from the middle of the Hudson River, from 50-130 passengers at a time, depending upon its boat of transport. Themed dinner and brunch cruises highlight some of the organization’s daily runs, along with private catered charters and parties- but in the middle of July, an evening Sunset Sail seemed most seasonally appropriate.

Joining our fellow passengers on the ledge of the North Cove Yacht Harbor in Battery Park City, our two hour tour would welcome us aboard the SHEARWATER vessel, a yacht recognized as a national landmark in 2009. The schooner, which dates back as early as the 1920′s, has a long and storied history- utilized during World War II, participated in a global navigation on two separate occasions, and has been competitively raced a multitude of times over the past four decades. Today, Manhattan By Sail uses the SHEARWATER for as many as five sails daily, ranging from Daytime Statue Sails at 12:30pm to pitch black views of the City Lights Sail at 9:30pm. In concert with its sister vessel, Clipper City which holds 130 passengers, nearly 750 guests a day can board an MBS sail, affordably priced for just about any budget.

With the July sun setting later in the evening, our ‘Sunset Sail’ kicked off promptly at 7pm, where the remaining daylight would guide us onto the bow of the sizable yacht. Finding a seat proved no issue despite the sail being entirely sold out. For just $50, we would spend the next two hours taking an array of pictures- as well as taking pictures of likeminded guests seeking to capture their similar experience for themselves. A cash bar on board proved pivotal in our enjoyment of the evening as ice cold pours of white wines and bottles of Corona allowed us to maximize the atmosphere on board. The boat may not have been ours- but with drinks in hand, we certainly reveled in a taste of the good life.

The sail would ultimately provide incredible and picturesque views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island at sunset, glimpses of the New Jersey and Brooklyn waterfronts and unparalleled shots of the Manhattan skyline brightly lit up by the cityscape. Though the ride could be slightly bumpy at times- it is an open air sailboat after all- the friendly, engaging crew did plenty to assuage the concerns of any passenger- and moving about the vessel was not only allowed, it was encouraged. Sure, you’ll have some folks that absolutely demand recreating a Titanic-style photo, but that hardly mars an otherwise reasonably priced and exciting look at New York City from the outside in. And because a trip aboard Manhattan By Sail is such a fun and unique experience, it’s one that every local New Yorker can truly appreciate.
