For a glimpse of upcoming events that we’ll be covering, check out the calendar in our side bar to your right. Otherwise, here are a few highlights to check out in and around Manhattan this weekend!

Arts & Culture

Friday, July 12th – Sometimes the best things in New York are in fact free. This weekend is Manhattanhenge folks, and if the word itself is unfamiliar to you, make yourself available outdoors on Friday evening as the sun miraculously shines a light on every single city street- on both sides of town. It only happens four times a year and there’s no RSVP or line to wait in to enjoy some of Manhattan’s breathtaking splendor. Just head to the east side and enjoy the sights. The sounds meanwhile, are still probably just as crass as ever.

Sunday, July 14th – New York City celebrates French pride annually as 60th Street shuts down for the annual Bastille Day celebration between Fifth Avenue and Lexington. Families galore will be crowding the streets tasting three full blocks of pastries and cheeses as well as live entertainers and music, and a variety of vendors selling all you can imagine. It’s as fun and festive a street fair as you’ll find all year long. And it’s only this Sunday! (Bastille Day NY)

Sports

Friday, July 12th – Sunday, July 14th – As Major League Baseball approaches the All-Star Game, the Bronx Bombers close out the season’s first half against the AL Central’s Minnesota Twins. Yankee Stadium plays host to two teams desperate for a short break as Flushing meanwhile, prepares to host a slew of fun filled fan fests beginning on Monday with the Home Run Derby and Tuesday’s All-Star Game. But first things first, let the Yanks mop the floor with the lowly Twins. (Yankees- Twins Tickets)

Music & Entertainment

Friday, July 12th – Movie release day. Quiet night tonight? Check out the films opening this weekend. Sandler, James, Rock, and Spade are back at it again. Hopefully this time, it’s funny. The PG-13 rated “Grown Ups 2” comes to you in theaters everywhere. We’ve got hopes for this one, despite us panning the previous. Meanwhile, “Pacific Rim” (PG-13) opens in 3D and Imax and everything else. And from all accounts, the sci-fi thriller is a fun and entertaining masterpiece from the mind of Guillermo del Toro. Starring Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Idris Elba (The Wire), we can’t wait to get out the popcorn and watch this thrillride.

Saturday, July 13th – In celebration of the MLB All-Star Game at Citi Field, the iconic Mariah Carey joins forces with the New York Philharmonic for a show in Central Park on Saturday evening. You can bet that procuring tickets this late in the game will be difficult if not impossible- but hey, it’s happening, it’s going to be memorable, and it’s where you should try to sneak off to this weekend. Just don’t tell your boys. If you’re a lady, then round up your gals and get to the park. I mean hey, the woman’s got a lot of hits. (Mariah Carey in Central Park)

Saturday, July 13th – Say What, Say What? Join the likes of Redman, Dizzy Wright, EPMD, and Pusha T as artists from hip hop’s past and present join forces for the now annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. Brooklyn Bridge Park plays host in Dumbo for what’s sure to be one of the summer’s most well attended and fun shows from start to finish. Slap on your snapback hat and make your way out this weekend. Word? (Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival)

Nightlife

Saturday, July 13th – It’s the Last Saturday Pool Party at DIP Aqua Bar tomorrow. The Grace Hotel plays host to a wet and wild pool party. Don your trunks and your nightwear for a fun as all get out evening of boozy swimming. No mood to get wet? Sit outside and watch the action live. Come on. It’s not gonna NOT be fun. And for $25, enjoy an hour of open bar, pool access, and much more. (DIP Aqua Bar)

Other

Saturday, July 13th – Head up to that borough that you don’t visit often enough for Yankee games. No you clown, not Staten Island- we’re talking about the Boogie Down Bronx. And for just $40 you can join some likeminded Boozehounds this weekend for The Great Bronx Bar Tour. Get this, you’ll check out TWENTY pubs while you kick back on cheap beers and free hot dogs. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Bronx County Historical Society. So for once, you blacking out is a good thing. (Great Bronx Bar Tour)

Otherwise, here are a few highlights to check out in and around Manhattan this weekend!

Arts & Culture

Friday, July 5th – The New York Open Film Festival was established to give New York filmmakers a chance to premiere their work in a unique venue. This one of a kind festival is most likely the only one to bring tennis enthusiasts, movie lovers and filmmakers together in a seamless manner. Check out a screening and see for yourself. Â (New York Open Film Festival)

Sports

Friday, July 5th – Sunday, July 7th – Keep the spirit of America’s Independence alive and well all weekend long with it’s greatest pastime! Take the train to the Bronx to cheer on your New York Yankees as the take on the Baltimore Orioles in a three game series at the house that Jeter built! (New York Yankees)

Music & Entertainment

Friday, July 5th – Movie release day. Quiet night tonight? Check out the films opening this weekend. The fireworks may be over, but there’s still time to check out these explosive releases at the box office! Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer bring the much loved television show, “The Lone Ranger” (PG-13) to the silver screen. Early word from critics is not extremely positive. But, hey it’s a family movie so bring the kids and escape the heat for a few hours. Speaking of family ready flicks, “Despicable Me 2″ (PG) is sure to clean up at the cinema with the voices of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig bringing some solid humor into the mix.

Saturday, July 6th- Actress turned indie singing queen, Zooey Deschanel and her partner in crime M. Ward are, “She & Him.” Grab your tickets now to witness these two talented cats take over the Central Park SummerStage. Keep your July 4th party going with their signature classic approach to the male and female duo. (Central Park SummerStage)

Nightlife

Friday, July 5th – Get ready to have your mind blown and your booty bounced when you check out DJ Damian Lazarus at New York’s hottest club, Marquee tonight! Tickets are on sale now. (Marquee NYC)

Other

Sunday, July 7th – For over a decade and counting Matt Timms has been traveling the country proving that cooking competitions can be as fun as rock concerts. Timms returns home to The Bell House, the popular Brooklyn venue for one of his famed “Ice Cream Takedowns” which happens to be one of the most competitive in his entire arsenal. For one Sunday afternoon guests can sample more than thirty local home cooks’ take on this legendary dessert. In the past we have tasted everything from bacon to doughnut flavored ice cream and needless to say, we are waiting with baited breath to see what these inventive chefs come up with next. The best part about the event is that the guests themselves vote upon who they think is best. We love to see democracy at work! (The Bell House)
