Friday, November 15th – Today, the Macarren Park Pool gets an ice skating rink. With 300 person capacity, there’ll be room for everyone to perform a triple-axel instead of a triple lindy. Friday, November 15th – Sunday, November 17th – Pick your sport this weekend and you can catch it locally. Crossing the river into New Jersey seems like a schlep, but a PATH ride into Newark is short as the Devils hit the ice on Friday night against the Los Angeles Kings and Saturday against the Penguins of Pittsburgh. The Rangers meanwhile wait until Sunday to return home for a matchup with the Kings as well. Hardwood fans rejoice as the so-so so far Knicks battle the Atlanta Hawks in the renovated Garden on Saturday night. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Aaron Rogers is out but that only means good things for Big Blue. The Packers hit Metlife Stadium for an NFC showdown with the suddenly streaking New York Giants. And finally from football to futbol, its Argentina and Ecuador in a battle of shinguards. Bring a jacket on Friday night at the Meadowlands.

Friday, November 15th – Quiet night in tonight? Check out the movies opening this weekend. The weekend movie slate is a bit barren but for “The Best Man Holiday” (R). Starring the likes of Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard and Regina Hall, the film is a follow up to 1999′s “The Best Man,” so I guess if you’ve been chomping at the bit for a sequel, this is your weekend. Otherwise, there’s a fun new documentary in limited release called “12-12-12″ highlighting the behind the scenes goings on for last year’s Hurricane Sandy tribute show at Madison Square Garden from Springsteen to Kanye, The Who to Billy Joel.

Friday, November 15th – Sunday, November 17th – Pick your musical poison this weekend by genre. Country concludes on Friday night as Florida Georgia Line closes out their last of 3 sold out shows at the Best Buy Theater in style. Hip Hop your game? Look no further than Macklemore and Ryan Lewis who are joined by Talib Kweli and Big K.R.I.T at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Friday, while Rick Ross performs at the Beacon Theatre on the same night. The indie and rock scenes won’t be left out this weekend either. Friday opens with He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister at Bowery Ballroom with support from Caught a Ghost as well as a trio of Saturday shows that should be pretty awesome- Chris Cornell headlines the Beacon Theatre, Paula Cole joins Ani DiFranco at Town Hall, and Gary Clark Jr. brings a sold out blues show to Terminal 5. What a weekend.

Saturday, November 16th – You like whiskey? Of course you do. Saturday afternoonm head to “Whiskey Washback” a celebration of 1919′s ratification of prohibition on Mercer Street. Here you’ll find more than 75 whiskeys from around the world, the ability to chat with brand ambassadors, photobooths, a DJ working the mix, and much more. There’s going to be food from Hill Country and unlimited oysters, clams, and scallop ceviche courtesy of Villae Fishmonger. It’s not quite 100 years ago, but we’re rounding up for a day poised to be fun as hell.

Friday, November 1st – Sunday, November 3rd – What a sports weekend in New York City and it gets started on Friday night in Brooklyn. The Nets welcome in the World Champion Miami Heat to the Barclays Center for an early season matchup of eastern conference heavyweights. Can Pierce and Garnett hold it down in Brooklyn against LeBron, Bosh and Wade? Meanwhile, all of the three local hockey teams are in action AND in town. And each game kicks off at 7pm. Locally, the Rangers take on the Hurricanes, the Islanders battle the Bruins on the Island, and the Devils host the Flyers. Sunday, the Knicks host the Timberwolves in an exciting matchup at the Garden, but the highlight of the weekend is in Jersey as the Jets play host to the New Orleans Saints. The schedule doesn’t get much easier and it starts this weekend for Gang Green.

Friday, November 1st – Quiet night in tonight? Check out the movies opening this weekend. DeNiro. Douglas. Freeman. Kline. It’s a bachelor party for the elder statesmen that winds up being much funnier than it had any right to be. It’s “Last Vegas” (PG-13) and although your parents will definitely enjoy it, so will you. You know, if for some reason you’re going to the movies tonight. Also, “Free Birds” (PG) which rolls in 3D with Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson. And George Takei, which is awesome.

Friday, November 1st – Saturday, November 2nd – November kicks off with some great live music. Friday night M.I.A. begins a two night stint at Terminal 5 while Ed Sheeran continues a multi-night residency at Madison Square Garden. Tickets are scarce for both so good luck in trying to procure them. Saturday, hop hop comes to the Barclays Center for Power 105.1′s “Powerhouse 2013″ show. Join 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar, Fabolous and more for a night of rap, blunts, 40′s, and whatever else people sing about.

Saturday, November 2nd – For two and a half hours, you can head to Sakagura in midtown for The Sake All Stars. Meet and greet some of the biggest names in the sake game straight from Japan to New York City. Participants include Tentaka, Masumi, Hoyo, Hakkaisan, Kaiun and more. Served hot or cold, it matters not much- it’s tasty and get gets you all kinds of smushed up. More than 40,000 runners will tackle 26.2 miles of New York City roadway for an afternoon unlike any other. Friday, October 18th – Sunday, October 20th – This weekend, you’ve got the opportunity to do something truly special. And that’s be in the presence of The Dalai Lama. The Beacon Theatre is the hosting site for two sessions per day on Friday and Saturday and a singular one on Sunday. His holiness is annually here in New York City and this year he’ll be also doing a Q&A session to boot. In a day and age of so much turmoil, it might be a good idea to try and find some peace. Tickets aren’t cheap, but on your deathbed, you’re certain to find total consciousness. Which is nice.

Saturday, October 19th – Join the PT Barnum of the home culinary world as Matt Timms takes over Brooklyn’s Bell House once again for ‘The Bacon Takedown.’ Dozens of home cooks gather to dole out more than 20 different samples of cured bacon. It’ll be in strips, in cookies, and who knows what else. But tickets are cheap and the experience is always special. Now what are you waiting for?

Sunday, October 20th – Well a week after we were effectively teased by the prospects that a Jets team might be good in 2013, they go out there and pull out a fart of a game against the Steelers at home. Life doesn’t get much easier this week as they welcome the arch rival New England Patriots to New Jersey for a 1pm showdown of AFC East teams headed in opposite directions. The 5-1 Pats. The 3-3 Jets. The battle for bragging rights.

Friday, October 18th – Quiet night in tonight? Check out the movies opening this weekend. Hurray! Sly Stallone. Arnold Schwarzenegger. “Escape Plan.” Rated R. That’s all you need to know. Well, that and it also features James (don’t call me Jim) Caviezel, you know, from that “Passion” movie. Also opening, for 99 glorious minutes, catch the remake of the horror classic “Carrie” (R), featuring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. A shy girl, largely ignored by her peers? Sounds like Jane Van Arsdale, the high school years. And if you’re looking for something a bit more ‘real,’ “The Fifth Estate” (R) follows the story of WikiLeaks’ earliest days. Meh.

Friday, October 18th – Saturday, October 20th – The rock returns to New York City all weekend long. Friday and Saturday, Pearl Jam celebrates the release of their latest album with two sold out shows at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Recent performance times have exceeded 3 hours and with no opener, be prepared for Eddie Vedder and the boys to dig deep into their archives. Also on Friday, Roseland Ballroom hosts the devils in Danzig celebrating the 25th anniversary of their self-titled album. Friday, October 11th – Quiet night in tonight? Check out the movies opening this weekend. We’ve been waiting for the return of Mel Gibson to the big screen. We haven’t? Oh. Well, like him or not, he’s here anyway. Starring alongside Danny Trejo, Charlie Sheen and Michelle Rodriquez, the “Machete Kills” (R) sequal has the potential for a lot of violence and that’s probably about it. But it sure sounds fun. Meanwhile, the weekend’s biggest opening is “Captain Phillips” (PG-13) starring Tom Hanks. Following the story of the 2009 US ship hijacking by Somali pirates, the two plus hour thriller is perhaps best viewed in IMAX.

On Friday, check out the CBGB Festival at Pianos as ‘Rookie of the Year’ and ‘American Pie’ star Thomas Ian Nicholas brings the TIN Band to the Lower East Side. Tickets are just $10. Friday, September 20th – Sunday, September 22nd – Big weekend for sports in New York City this weekend.  First, yes baseball season is still going on and in an historic interleague series, the Giants of San Francisco return to the Bronx which is hardly am every year occurrence to take on the Yankees in a three game set.  The Yanks are still clinging to their playoff hopes while the Giants are….well….. they won last year.  As the career of Mariano Rivera winds to a close this year, this may be one of your last chances to see the King pitch in person.  (Yankees-Giants Tickets)

Sunday, September 22nd – The New York Jets are home this weekend with a 4:25pm start against the new look Buffalo Bills.  It’s a matchup of rookie quarterbacks with Buffalo’s E.J. Manuel set to take on Geno Smith in an AFC East divisional showdown.  With the Patriots looking feeble and the Dolphins looking strong, this could be the year the whole division shifts.  And whose to say one of these two franchises aren’t primed to take it all over? Friday, September 20th – Quiet night in tonight…  The highlight of this weekend’s slate is definitely “Prisoners” (R) starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman in a chilling thriller where Jackman’s six year old daughter is kidnapped.  Detective Gyllenhaal doesn’t move fast enough and Jackman is confronted with taking the circumstances into his own hands.  The trailer alone is suspenseful as one can get without revealing what is certain to be a climactic ending.  Also opening, “Enough Said” (R) in limited release, which we just reviewed earlier this week.  Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and one of the final acting appearances of James Gandolfini, the film is both funny and thought provoking at once and is a middle aged love story that isn’t strictly for your parents to go and see.

Friday, September 20th – Saturday, September 21st – ‘I Don’t Care.  I Love it!’  Pop rocks tonight at Webster Hall as Icona Pop take the stage with support from K Flay and Sirah.  Doors are at 6pm so get there early for the show, a precursor to next week’s at Music Hall of Williamsburg.  Also tonight, the boys from Vampire Weekend continue their world domination at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in front of 17,000 screaming lunatics.  Tomorrow night, the dulcet tones of Sarah Brightman head to Radio City Music Hall for a sold out show- keep tabs on tickets as some may open before showtime.

Friday, September 20th – Saturday, September 21st – The nightlife heats up in NYC this weekend.  First it’s Rubix Kube at The Cutting Room on Friday night.  Join the City’s most fun 1980′s cover band as they run down all the hits you remember when you either had big hair or weren’t in the womb yet.  Either way, you’re not gonna not have fun.  On Saturday, do something good with your evening and head to the Alahambra Ballroom until 11pm for the Fierce Fall Ball 2013.  Enjoy a red carpet walk, dinner, drinks, all to benefit battling the HIV and AIDS epidemic on a local level – here in New York.  And if you’re looking for something a little more low key- hit up Glazz for Latin Saturdays until 4am where The Turntable Assassins take over the, you guessed it, turntables.  And everyone’s free until midnight.

Saturday, September 21st – Okay get ready for this one.  Tompkins Square Park hosts the NYC Pizza Run on Saturday morning.  For $50, you get the opportunity to join a bunch of other clowns in eating three slices of pizza IN THE MIDDLE of running a race!  There’s three different checkpoints to stop, devour a full slice of pie, and then get back on the trail.  Following the race, there are nearby bars offering discounted drinks for those of us crazy enough to actually be running but the lunacy does have a cause- the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation- which is a good thing.

Friday, September 13th – Movie release day. Quiet night tonight? Check out the films opening this weekend. “The Family” (R) opens tonight and sees Robert DeNiro’s return to a mob-style role alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, and Dianna Agron. ‘The Family’ gets relocated to France in the Witness Protection Program where we learn that old habits are difficult to shake. Also opening, “Insidious: Chapter 2″ (R) is a horror movie sequel featuring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as a family examines how they are still being haunted by childhood secrets.

Friday, September 13th – Sunday, September 15th – Another weekend with some good live music to check out here in NYC. Saturday and Sunday rockers Alt-J are throwing two sell out parties- one at the Hammerstein Ballroom and the other at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. We’re recommending the outdoor one because 1) there are a couple of tickets remaining and 2) openers are Lord Huron. As part of ‘The Under Oath Tour’ the Beacon Theatre welcomes Dane Cook back to New York City on Saturday night. The story telling funnyman has a stronghold in New York, home to his last full length comedy album more than five years ago. The weekend closes out with the TJ Martell Foundation’s Family Day on Sunday afternoon from Roseland Ballroom. The day long event features performances from Ed Sheeran, Austin Mahone, and Jason Mraz, in an advocacy fundraiser for Leukemia.

Saturday, September 7th – How’s this for culture? Coney Island is hosting a ‘Beard and Moustache Competition’ on Saturday afternoon. Friday, September 6th – Sunday, September 8th – That other sport might be returning this weekend, but America’s Pastime is still in full swing. And what a weekend to be a sports fan as the Boston Red Sox head to Yankee Stadium for a 4 game set with the Bronx Bombers. The series got off to a fiery start in Game 1, but Mo Rivera and the Yankees are poised to make a dent in the Sox’ surprising playoff hopes. Sunday, September 8th – Part of the beauty of football season is the ability to catch so many games. Well in the NFL’s opening weekend, Sunday captures that essence entirely for New Yorkers. The action begins at 1pm as the Jets host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their 2013 home opener. Darrelle Revis returns to New Jersey for the first time since leaving the Jets in rookie quarterback’s pro debut with the team. Jets tickets are available here. Friday, September 6th – Movie release day. Quiet night tonight? Check out the films opening this weekend. This weekend’s big opening sees the return of Vin Diesel in “Riddick” (R). It’s a two hour action fest that features the baritone star alongside Karl Urban in a violent run against alien survival. It’s available in iMAX as well, for that full experience. Hey, “One Direction: This is Us” is still out.

Friday, September 6th – Sunday, September 8th – Fortunately while summer has ended, the concert scene in New York has not. Friday and Saturday, catch Passion Pit performing at Pier 26 at Hudson River Park. Meanwhile, the sounds of Depeche Mode come to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center Friday, before it’s overtaken by the guys from Fall Out Boy on Saturday night. Speaking of Saturday, check out pop star Cher Lloyd as she takes over the Times Square stage at the Best Buy Theater. Finally we cap the weekend off on Sunday night, fittingly in Williamsburg at the Music Hall with the soothing vocals of Laura Marling. Like I said, it’s a big weekend.

Friday, August 30th – Sunday, September 1st –With the Zoo mentioned above, there are after parties each night all over town.  If you ain’t feelin’ the zoo, try the rooftop at The Delancey aka the DL Rooftop Lounge for the STAR Vodka End of Summer Party.  With a fashion show and music courtesy of DJ Serebe, the party rages until 2am.  Meanwhile, Sunday is a fun filled rooftop party of another sort- the Empire Hotel says goodbye to summertime at 10pm with its “Labor Day Sunday Party.”  There’s beautiful views, a posh lounge, and drink specials all night too.  Pop that collar and blow out that hair- it’s party time.

Sunday, August 25th – The PT Barnum of local events heads to Bushwick Brooklyn’s The Active Space on Sunday from 6-9pm. It’s the “Velvet Painting Takedown” presented by Matt Timms. Using black velvet, some of NYC’s top painters have a limit on time to create artistic portrayals to benefit Art-Start.org. At the event’s conclusion, the paintings will all be put up for auction. The next big series of movies drops this weekend- “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” (PG-13) becomes the latest in best-selling books to become feature film, opens up this weekend in Imax. Hey, even if you haven’t read the books, it’s set in New York City. Otherwise, you MUST have read our full review of “The World’s End” (R) starring the guys from “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz.” It’s getting rave reviews as a funny and scary apocalyptic bar crawl. And speaking of scary, “You’re Next” (R) promises strong bloody violence with a twist on the run of home invasion horror films, also opening tonight.
Friday, August 23rd – Sunday, August 25th – Another weekend, another run of concerts here in New York City. Religious types can rally around the appearance of Amy Grant at Irving Plaza- the lady crooner brings the early 90’s hits to NYC tonight! (Amy Grant Tickets) Not a Catholic? No problem.
